Philadelphia reporters note three thousand troops quartered for the national encampment with Maj. Gen. William H. Slocum taking command tomorrow. Ex-Gov. Underwood of Kentucky backs the event, while State Fencibles of Pennsylvania are barred from competition. Governor Pattison denies entry to a State Penncibles unit. More regiments from the south and west expected, aiming for up to five thousand men.
In Portland Kohler, held for poisoning George H Harmon this February, faces new scrutiny as arsenic is found in the exhumed body. Mrs Harmon, amid illness in Standish after visiting friends, was found to have attempted suicide with poison but recovered with treatment.
Reports describe a heavy thunder shower in Concord New Hampshire where two houses were struck by lightning. A separate storm in Warren caused downed trees and flooded crops as wind and hail swept through the area.
Weary M Stanley plans to sail for the Congo region at the end of July amid reports his Congo railway and mining venture lacks English financial support. A. L. Fuller, Dartmouth 85, marries Julia Turner in Hanover and will sail for Europe with his wife and sister after the ceremony. A New York millionaire delays buying dining room pictures because the room’s wallpaper is too handsome to cover.
A group of American steamship line representatives appeared before Postmaster General Vilas to contest the denial of distributing the $400,000 Congress allotted for mail service. Delegates from Pacific Mail, Red D Line, New York and Cuba Line, New York Havana and Mexican Line, United States and Brazil line, and Clyde Line urged terms to continue carrying the mails while expressing willingness to serve the government. The Postmaster General stood by prior views, and no policy change followed.
Deed Park Maryland letter from S B Elkins dated June 22 1885 disputes a report that he or his brother owned the Maxwell land grant. He states he was never an owner directly or indirectly and explains his past roles as attorney and director without stake. He asks for proof if any information suggests ownership and requests the letter be filed with Maxwell land grant records.
Washington reports a near 2 million shortfall in the current fiscal year’s internal revenue receipts versus the 113 million treasury estimate owing to lower distilled spirits yields. Bonds extend, whiskey pressure wanes, and much bonded whiskey will be taxed after July 6. Also notes strict enforcement of the two year ban on former officials practicing before agencies, a proposed Bureau of Engraving reorganization, army promotions after Lieut. Col. Gentry’s death, and president’s appointments including Spokane Falls land office and Boston pension agent postings.
Mrs William Smith of 10 Dean Street Rochester says she is John McCulloughs sister. She recounts their separation at Castle Garden New York when he was a youth, his early stage life in Philadelphia, and notes a money dispute with a stage associate. She denies reports of marriage or children.
Williams College in Williamstown Massachusetts reports a busy start to commencement week with a Glee Club concert, a junior dramatic club performance, and an Adelphian Union address by Rev Dr E E Hale. Alumni trustees election appears favorable to Barker and Gilfillan amid negotiations over a trustee resignation. Ensuing meetings discuss campus improvements and science funding. At ToToledo Ohio a riot followed a priest's pulpit announcement to resign. A mob attacked the saloon of Peter Szelaszkiewicz, then dragged and shot Albert Dalkowski and beat his wife. A bystander Martin Dobroczski was killed. Police arrested 22 men and five women. over 100 people fought. The Polish church pastor blamed hostile elements in his parish. arrests to continue.
Philadelphia June 29. In a meeting the eastern baseball league expelled Wilmington for failing to pay guarantees to Virginia and Norfolk. Trenton was allowed to finish its championship game in Jersey City. The foul bound was abolished. Hartford and Albany declined to join this season. The league will continue with six clubs and the schedule was rearranged.
New Bedford Massachusetts June 29 At a meeting of the overseers of the poor tonight it was voted to give physicians discretion on sending prescription to druggists Dr W R Cuthbert was fined 10 and costs today from which he appealed for assault on his wife Eudora He vehemently declared in court that she was not his wife as he had another wife living There is much talk about the affair.
From Bombay to London reports Isa Khan led by Russian allies rose against Abdullah Khan and captured Kahanabad after a fierce battle, looting £1,000,000 of the ameer’s treasure. Reprisals feared as Afghan unrest grows and Britain considers a strong response if Russians are implicated. London advised swift disclosures from St. Petersburg.
London reports a Midlothian liberal meeting endorsing Gladstone’s leadership and unity after his letter thanking reform-minded liberals. Earl of Rosebery spoke as a resolution of confidence passed, noting Gladstone will stay as party leader to preserve unity and efficiency. The piece also covers stock prospects and Franco-Chinese treaty notes.
Gainesville Texas June 29 A Delaware Bend region lynching spree reported as 12 men hanged in two weeks with six more later, including Frank Morgan Bill Williams and a boy named Moor. Det. Jack Duncan leads a posse with bloodhounds to chase the Lee gang amid rewards offered for their capture.
A special Meriden Conn meeting over Corner Congregational church pastor Rev C H Everest fails to oust opponents and bars nonbelievers from church committees. The vote delays any pastor appointment beyond three months without church vote, prompting Everest to resign his candidacy and denounce the exclusionary resolution.
The annual report of the bank commissioners shows deposits at time of examination of 45, £ 18,355 41, with net increase 1 785 759 56 and surplus 1 515 443 16. Guaranty fund stands 1 950 963 45 against 1 699 043 72 last year. Entire liabilities 47 315 532 25, assets 47 515 532 25. Local mortgages decline to 5 918 222 34, personal and collateral loans adjust, and investments feature bonds and stocks with totals noted. Cash on hand and deposits exceed last year by about 250,000, foreclosed real estate reduced to 521,839 34 from 670,334 48. Dividends for the year varied, nine banks at 5 percent, others at different rates, Salmon Falls bank declares usual 10 percent.

At Fisher Hill inquiry ninth session Boston lawyers argued to compel George A. Wilson to attend. Morse claimed the committee could force testimony. Russ and Thomas countered lack of judicial power and rights to avoid self incrimination. After debate the panel adjourned to consider, planning a Supreme Court action for a ruling.
The third annual gathering of the national and state labor statistical bureaus met at the Commonwealth building on Mt. Vernon street. President Col. Carroll D. Wright led the officers, with James Bishop and John S. Leard also in key roles as delegates from many states and Canada attended.

Natick Massachusetts June 20 during a thunder storm Louis Whitney of North Main street was struck inside his house but suffered no serious damage. His pants were torn and one shoe removed before the bolt passed through the side of the house. The shower was light though the lightning was sharp and rapid.
