Fire swept the after turret of the battleship Ohio at the Brooklyn navy yard, forcing the powder magazine to be flooded as a precaution against explosion. The blaze smoldered for about thirty minutes along rubber insulation and cotton waste in the wiring.
A fire broke out in the after turret of the battleship Ohio shortly after 4 PM while 750 crew were aboard. Smoke filled the turret as automatic flooding and ship hoses were used to combat flames. Authorities cited a dropped rivet during bulkhead installation as the likely cause near the magazine containing about 3000 pounds of powder and other ammunition. The blaze burned for about an hour and was extinguished by 5 PM with nearby ships North Dakota and Alabama at anchor.
