Class Day Dance Breaks Old Harvard Custom in 1838

The Harvard Monthly notes a shift from the old sober Class Day tradition to a spontaneous dance on the green in 1838. Ladies were invited to stay after the spreads, aided by a brass band, while seniors formed a tree dancing circle, with Boston and Cambridge belles present. The impromptu celebration followed the chapel exercises, with dancing on the grass in walking costumes and a lively, unplanned performance. The piece also mentions Edwin Emerson’s new material and a Moody poem.
