An attempted destruction of the steamer Nina on Mascoma Lake failed after an explosive cartridge was placed in the smoke-stack. Captain Packara's son started a wood fire beneath the boiler, and a loud explosion blew the smoke-stack and nearby woodwork into a shapeless mass but did not injure the boiler or crew.
Gloucester dispatch reports Captain Enos of the schooner Della F Tarr heard from Captain Andrews of the dory Mermaid on June 26 after being sighted sixty three miles southeast by east from Highland Light. Andrews said he was exhausted with no sleep for 36 hours and asked to be reported. It is the first time he has been spoken by a passing vessel.
An iron bridge under construction by Empire Portland Cement Company over the Erie Canal at Warner's collapsed yesterday in Syracuse. Nine workers fell into the canal and were rescued. William B. Cada was killed or fatally injured and William F. Austin was seriously injured.

Five Massachusetts State Prison convicts at Charlestown break out by sawing a window bar. Three escapees flee into the park then scale a twelve foot wall using a timber prop. Baxter is caught on the grounds. Coffey and Mulien remain missing with a citywide hunt underway. Authorities await returns as officers pursue all leads and review guards on duty.
During the public education bill committee stage Hon Henry Harley Fowler moved a clause favoring local control of grant schools, backed by Liberal leaders. Joseph Chamberlain warned against popular control of denominational schools, noting cost and religious status. Goschen and others argued against removing religious influence. Fowler's clause was rejected 276 to 166.

Despatches from Constantinople report the Sultan of Turkey has ratified the Brussels anti slavery convention act. Sir James Fergusson, Political Secretary, noted France has not ratified and said delegates would meet in Brussels to decide if non ratifying powers let the convention lapse.
Despatches from Zanzibar report Emin Pasha and his party moving toward Albert Edward Nyanza. Emin plans a scientific expedition to the Mountains of the Moon. British officers fighting East Africa slave trade in 1890 say the trade is dying and the Brussels Anti Slavery Convention Act will end it.
The Hon Edward Stanhope Secretary of State for the War Department said he would provide a return listing non commissioned officers in the British army tried by court martial and punished for gambling offences in 1888 1889 and 1890.
