Stock market shows moderate activity with Atchison, West End and Water Tower leading. Boston bank statement notes increased surplus reserves.
A riot at Oak Ridge, Girard, La., left one white man and six negroes dead and several whites wounded after a negro arrest for an indecent assault. Officers confronted the gang during arrests, with Constable Higginbotham killed after being struck by gunfire. John Conger died of wounds later, having taken eleven bullets. The violence ended by nightfall and order was restored.
Old Colony steamboat officials plan another attempt to pull the steamer Providence off Dyer's Island after lime schooners Salmon Washburn and Samuel L. Crocker of Taunton were chartered to assist. A cofferdam was built under the vessel to place her on shore.
Sir James Ferguson announced in Commons that Turkey asked for postponement until July 4 of ratification of the Anglo Turkish Egyptian convention and England consented. Glascow June 27 Thistle defeats Irex in a fifty mile match race over the Northern Yacht Club course. Thistle finishes in 4h 9m 40s, Irex 4h 17m 46s, with a one minute three second allowance margin. Captain Barr hails it as the best test yet. Irex shows strong handling despite losing a spinnaker near the end. Thistle proceeds to Dunoon near Greenock.
London reports in the House of Commons that the government will proceed with the crimes bill until it passes the report stage. Morley urged a three year limit, condemning perpetual coercion while Webster defended safeguards in the act. Gladstone supported limiting duration. amendment rejected 180 to 119.
Prince Albert Victor and Prince George of Wales arrived in Kings Town and Dublin Ireland to cheers and addresses. The Irish viceroy and town officials welcomed them with formal sentiments praising constitutional government while crowds shouted Coercion and occasional cheers for Mr Parnell.

Hooper presented the 1883 railroad bill and its veto by Governor Cleveland. Charles K. Dayton testified on the bill's 1884 passage amid a 6:30 adjournment.
Albany June 27 A Waterford man John Walker died after a canal tow in West Troy. His body was found near Cohoes horribly mangled with remaining money 19 cents. A mule team and A C Chandler boat were involved. hat found on towpath. evidence of a violent struggle.

Harvard defeats Columbia on New London river in a stunning four mile race, beating Yale’s 1884 record by 11 seconds with a two and a half length victory while Columbia also breaks the old time. The crowd roared as both crews matched pace through mile markers and the Crimson surged at the finish.
A large fire in Marshfield on the Wisconsin Central railroad yard started in W. H. Upham’s lumber yard. It swept the business district destroying warehouses a saw mill and Tremont House while the depot and telegraph wires were lost and losses may reach about a million dollars with Upham the heaviest loser.

PortLane Oregon notes a fire wrecking Ullman’s business district, loss around $80,000, insured about two thirds. Putnam Connecticut records a barn fire at Danielson Hill2, destroying livestock, hay, farming gear. total loss near $4000, partially insured.
Avensra Me June 27 Ex Governor Anson P Morrill suffered a partial stroke while riding in a carriage with a lady. He was taken home and his senses have returned. He can move his limbs converse and his physician hopes for recovery. He is 84 years old.
Hanover June 27 reports Aegis editors Fisher and Lawrence suspended after an offensive caricature. after public sympathy and review, they return to take spring term exams. Earlier, Rollins Morse and Lockwood prizes were awarded at the college church with applause, amid mixed speaking quality.
