Fire guts East Boston lodging house. four escape on perilous fall

A fire at 155 157 Meridian Street East Boston gutted a lodging house run by Mrs Josephine White. George Rollis John Day jumped from a third story window 8 feet to ground injuring Day badly. Two year old Nicholas Galdam fractured his nose cut his eye and burned his hands. Charles Moran rescued by firemen from an upper story. Fire began in A Saperstein shoe store on the first floor and spread rapidly.

Carnegie 400000 Gift Sparks City Hall Clash

Alderman Linehan attacked Andrew Carnegie’s 400000 offer to Boston for a trade school fund saying the money was blood money earned by the labor of poor US workers in steel. The Board of Aldermen, by 11 to 1, voted to accept the gift.

The crew of the Mentor from Bangor narrowly escaped drowning when the lumber laden schooner filled with water off South Boston. Captain Frank Barter and brothers Howard and Cleveland Barter awoke to rising water, getting to deck as the vessel listed and sank, with the cabin ruined and all gear lost.

Everett resident Patrick Grandfield a 45 year old plasterer at 87 West Third Street was badly burned on his right hand arm and side after grabbing a live electric wire lying across the sidewalk.

Annie Elizabeth McCabe a 15 year old student at St Francis de Sales Parochial School Charlestown collapsed during graduation exercises and died of heart disease. She was seated with the graduates and pale handling hush fell over the 900 in attendance. Rev M J Supple and sisters reacted with shock as Dr Kempton declared the cause.

Colonel Henry W. Comstock aged 73 was arrested in North Cambridge on charges of stealing two $1000 bonds from Mrs. Cora Frothingham. He had earlier claimed a major railroad securities robbery on a Fall River boat. He was taken to the Tombs to await bail.

Burrows Not To Be Deported

United States Treasury Department decides that Peter Burrows an English textile expert may stay in the United States. He had been ordered deported by Immigration Commissioner Billings but is found to be in the country to introduce a new industry and thus not subject to the contract labor law. Burrows first arrived in Boston April 21 was arrested and sent back to England. He later returned to the United States and was taken into custody again at Dover New Hampshire.
