Narrow escape as steamer May Queen burns at Tyngs Island
On June 26 in Lowell the Martin Luther Association’s picnic steamer May Queen caught fire near its Tyngs Island outing. Flames spread from boilers to the cabin and pilot house, forcing passengers to flee. The May Queen burned to the waterline and sank about thirty yards from the landing. The crew tried to fight the fire. the party returned safely on another steamer. Loss is fully insured.
