Ipswich citizens held a mass meeting voting to remove strike leaders from the town. The event involved confrontations with labor figures and signaled local tensions over overtime and workers’ protests.
At a Ipswich Town Hall meeting with over 500 attending, citizens voted to appoint 10 vigilante committee members to drive out I W W leaders behind a hosiery strike. Chairman Charles G Hull warned force may be used to keep Ipswich orderly and railroa d leaders from town.
Robert Scott Lovett, Union Pacific chairman, told the Senate lobby committee that a long effort sought to hire Edward Lauterbach to "grease the wheels" in Washington and shield the company from agitation in Congress against the dissolution plan of the Union Pacific Southern Pacific systems ordered by the Department of Justice.
Judge Lovett did not allege corrupt methods in Lauterbachs employment. He testified a caller posing as Congressman Riordan of New York urged retaining the New York attorney and warned of possible congressional trouble that employment might avert. A similar call to Maxwell Evarts, Southern Pacific counsel, was reported.
Paris June 2 Curtis Guild former United States ambassador to Russia was robbed in his Paris hotel of $1000 cash and a $50,000 letter of credit. The hotel manager reports $44,000 already drawn on the credit. Guild drew money from a bank earlier, left it in an unlocked desk drawer, and found the stash missing this morning. Paris police and detectives pursue the thief as Guild plans to sail to New York on the Cincinnati from Boulogne tomorrow.
A false alarm from a box at Essex street and Cottage Farm road in Brookline early today sent a hose wagon ladder truck and chief's car racing three miles from the center after officers spotted a car leaving the box with several people. Police and firemen fear joy riders are using alarms to amuse themselves and trigger long emergency runs.
The stockholders' committee of the New York New Haven Hartford will meet the railroad's directors this afternoon at 3 o'clock in the New Haven's New York offices.
The stockholders' committee gains backing from J P Morgan & Co and the Pennsylvania Railroad with allied firms like American Express and New York Central. George von L Meyer, chair, says proxies from Morgan and Pennsylvania are not yet received and may not be forthcoming. A meeting aims to gauge directors' help for the committee as it grows to over 30,000 proxies amid expectations of action and investigation into New Haven management.

Fifteen persons are believed killed when the Canadian Pacific Western express derailed three miles west of Ottawa Ontario. Four cars plunged into the Ottawa River and two more were wrecked on the track.
A heavily laden immigrant train ran off rails near here just before 2.00 pm due to spreading rails. By 3 pm eight bodies were recovered from two colonist cars overturned in the river. Victims included four men three women and a baby. Up to 15 may have died with others feared trapped under wreckage. The passengers were mainly Scotch settlers arriving to farm.
Two young boys smoking in a cellar started a two alarm blaze in the Emerson block on Main near Everett. The fire caused about 10 000 dollars in damage. A lodger was rescued as flames reached a second story window while mothers guided children to the street and a fireman suffered a cut when a window blew out.
A three story wooden Emerson block at 314A Main street burned after flames fed by an east wind. Fire chief Swan sounded a second alarm, rescuing Albert Neal in night attire from his room as others escaped. Damages total about 5000 to the building and 5000 to furnishings plus 1500 loss to the Davis home.
Private detectives circulated on the Imperator pier and deck near the Imperial suite door, believed to shelter Mr Mackay and his children Ellen Kathrine and John William. They blocked anyone who looked ready to serve legal papers, though no papers were served and police were told the move was precautionary.
Samuel A. Segee former chairman of the Board of Assessors in Revere was sentenced to three years at hard labor in the House of Correction for forging state tax books he supervised. The judge stayed the term and sent the case to the Supreme Judicial Court for review amid numerous exceptions.
