Ten deaths attributed to the heat spell as humidity remains oppressive in Boston. Mercury readings show no abnormal pattern, and forecasters expect continued sunshine with no rain through today, according to weather reports. Continued on Page 4.
The hot wave gripping the region east of the Mississippi is forecast to continue for two or three days before rain cools temperatures, according to weather bureau reports tonight.
In the first Harvard Yale series game at Soldiers Field Harvard rallied to beat Yale 3 to 2 in 11 innings. Aronson scored the winning run on McLaughlin’s drive to right after Yale led 2 0 through six innings as 12000 spectators watched the late drama.
The contest was fought to the death with sensational plays in every inning. Yale and Hartford players were cool and determined, delivering wonderful pitching and fielding. Yale managed two runs, narrowly edging Hartford.
In South Berwick, Maine, Miss Sarah Orne Jewett, renowned American woman writer, died at 6 40 PM after an illness of eleven months. She was 60 and had lived at her home since last March, suffering from apoplexy and paralysis.
Miss Jewett died after a stroke and brain hemorrhage that followed a lengthy illness begun in Boston earlier this year. She had lived with Mrs James T Fields in Boston before returning home in a special car with her sister and nurses. The Jewish family house in which she was born and died dates to 1740 and had hosted many literary figures.
Chairman Sullivan of the new Finance Commission says the panel aims to assist honest economical and efficient government, back a good Mayor and check a bad one. George A O Ernst calls ex Mayor Fitzgerald an agile municipal acrobat and notes his support for Plan 2. Mayor Hibbard says he urged Sullivan to run for Mayor two years ago and hopes he becomes Governor.
The lead speech for charter plan No 2 featured at a Committee of 100 dinner for the old Finance Commission at the American House. Nearly 400 Boston citizens attended in the heat above 100 degrees and voiced strong support for the plan, signaling its push toward nomination by petition and nine Aldermen.
At a dinner Chairman John A. Sullivan of the new Finance Commission touts its role in aiding a good mayor and checking a bad one. George A. O. Ernst mocks Fitzgerald the reformer and derisively comments on former mayors and political plots as the crowd reacts with sharp sarcasm.
Edith May Thompson Woodill, 22, was found nude and disfigured in Back Creek at McDaniel. John T Roberts alias Emmett E. Robert, a suspect, was arrested. she was the wife of Gilbert Woodill of Los Angeles and ward of ex Treasury Secretary Lyman J. Gage. once lived in Boston and reportedly divorced from a Boston physician.
A body with a crushed skull and iron pot weight was found by crabbing boys in a Choptank River tributary near Mrs. Woodill’s foster-father home. Roberts, seen with Mrs. Woodill last, is accused. motive remains unclear as investigators connect past acquaintance and a motor-boat outing on Niles River.
In Fort Kent Maine 23 youths set out for a St Louis parish fair when the ferryboat sprang a leak and overturned in Fish River. Priest Rev Arthur Decary and Rene Cyr plunged in to save several swimmers. three girls drowned and 20 others reached shore.
After the boat was righted the bodies of Colina Gagnon 18 Clara Charette 14 and Taahelle Deprey 12 were located and recovered. Those who boarded the ferryboat were unnamed in the readable text.

Pittsburgh wins a tight game over St. Louis. Brooklyn beats Philadelphia. Heat disrupts Harvard and Valeerewa. Miss Hoteh loses to Miss Hotehe Kiss in a tennis semifinal. Heston Nathonale plays Philadelphia at Walpole Street Grounds.
Attorney General Wickersham orders dismissal of the government suit against the New York, New Haven & Hartford railroad for alleged Sherman anti trust law violations. The move ends the action, which had been anticipated but not expected to conclude so quickly.
Attorney general says passage of a Massachusetts railroad holding bill justified dismissal of the suit. The statute would authorize the consolidation of the Boston and Maine Railroad and the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad under one management with safeguards for Massachusetts residents. He continues to outline the purpose and effect of the measure.
Boston can move to second place with two wins today as the Athletics win their game against the Highlanders. A doubleheader at Washington and a single game in Philadelphia set up possible standings scenarios including narrow gaps over Philadelphia and Cleveland with Lake's team aiming for runner-up in the American League.
