A deadly melee at a Knoxville garden party escalated after a critic of soldiers accused U S troops in the Philippines of hoodlum tendencies. Four men were struck. Alonzo Barger was stabbed twenty times, Lincoln Monday wounded, and Kenney killed by Monday in the fray.
Cambridge residents found no worship yesterday as Mayor McNamee ordered church closures amid a smallpox outbreak. Most congregations remained closed while vaccination clinics served 600 plus residents. four new cases were reported and areas were roped off with notices to deter visits.
In Beverly and Essex a thousand two hundred volunteers conducted a daylong sweep for 11 year old Wilbur Clark who vanished on June 17. A new eyewitness described a medium man near the lake, prompting state officers to widen the hunt while a reward fund grew and towns provided aid.
Toronto faced violent clashes as strikers and sympathizers opposed a test run by a street railway employing replacement workers. Traffic was suspended pending troop arrival, with bricks and missiles shattering windows and injuries reported. The National Fireworks Company on King Street West Hanover was burned out, with 2000 cases of finished goods in the shipping room. The fire, suspected incendiary, caused 5 000 to 30 000 dollars in losses with 9 900 dollars insured. Firefighters were scarce, locals battled flames, and a magazine near the plant held thousands of pounds of powder. Proprietor George J. J. Clark helped save the stock by removing loose powder to safety as explosions rocked the area for hours.
A Shanghai despatch to Central News reports the Chinese cruiser Kai-Chi was destroyed by a massive explosion in the Yangtse river. The ship sank in 30 seconds with 150 officers and men killed or drowned. only two survived. The Kai-Chi displaced 2163 tons, 200 feet long, built in 1883 with a single screw.
Captain Frederick G. Wild of the Thirteenth Infantry was reprimanded by court martial for the burning of a native cockpit. Civil judge Johnston alleged soldiers witnessed the fire and urged Wild to provide information. Wild denied involvement and criticized the emphasis on the cockpit incident.
