Free Coinage Debate Showed Speaker Reed Support
Washington June 22 The Democratic members of the House opposed free coinage but supported Speaker Reed when he moved the silver bill to the committee on coinage. A 14 to 117 vote kept free coinage unlikely while party divisions showed broad Democratic opposition and a stable Republican majority. Other appropriation bills progress and the large number of bills sent to the President were noted as Congress works through the session.

House Votes Down Bland Appeal On Silver Bill Tabling
Washington June 22. The House defeated Mr. Bland of Missouri's motion to reconsider his appeal from the chair over the silver bill. McKinley’s motion to table Bland's appeal passed 146 to 45 after a lengthy procedural dispute about referring Senate amendments to the coinage committee. Several Democrats and all free coinage supporters largely backed tabling, while many others did not vote. The bill was referred to the Coinage committee as the debate concluded.
