The Lowell mills strike, which began March 30 and involved about 17 000 operatives, ended June 21 with union approval to return to work on the best terms. Costs include 1 300 000 in wages and 50 000 to storekeepers. high cotton prices hindered a 10 percent wage demand.
Nearly two and a half inches of rain drenched Boston on the first day of summer in 1903. With a chill 50 degree air, residents stayed indoors by fires as a dreary wind swept through, churches and beaches deserted, while the sewer system swiftly carried floodwaters to the ocean and prevented damage.
Major James B Pond famed lec turer and singer manager dies at his Jersey City home from complications after an operation on June 17 that led to leg amputation below the knee. Born June 11, 183 in Cuba New York, Pond was closely linked with noted stage and press figures and shared strong memories of Wendell Phillips Chauncey Depew Booker T Washington Henry Ward Beecher and Talmage. His remarks on these figures and his England lecture tour with Dr. Talmage are noted in his obituary.
The Lowell strike hit seven large cotton mills affecting about 40 plants. It arose from managers’ refusal to grant a 10 percent wage increase demanded by workers, over 11 000 of whom were women. Mill owners argued profits were too low to raise wages without harming dividends. Many French Canadian workers left for Canada, and skilled help found work elsewhere. Within three weeks about 6000 workers had left the city, with many returning blackened in recent weeks.
Lowell June 21 The strike of 40 woolen spinners at Middlesex Woolen Mills ends. A delinquent union member who owed six weeks dues is discharged from the union and has left the mill of his own accord.
Belgrade June 21 The military deputation to King Peter in Geneva announces promotions of conspirators. Colonel Popovics, former palace guard, raised to general and first aide to the king. Captain Kosties who opened the palace gates for the assassins is promoted to major. Lieutenant Granica, guard at the palace during the killings and confidant of the conspirators, becomes a captain.
Louisa G Hardie 17 from East Saugus elopes with a Lynn man’s wagon team, driving a plumber’s rig through Salem streets. She is jailed on a charge of driving a horse without the owner’s consent, while Bates, blamed for the ride, has yet to appear. The tale spans New Hampshire birth, Boston Industrial Home past, and a Willows road arrest by two policemen after a chase.
The Chelsea Odd Fellows held a memorial service at the Universalist Church for departed brothers. Mystic Winnisimmet Neptune Faith and Samaritan lodges attended in regalia with Rev R Perry Bush delivering the eulogy. Since the previous service 33 Mystic, 49 Winnisimmet, 2 Neptune, and 2 Faith members have died. The church choir provided selections.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for Monday showers with clearing later. Tuesday will be fair with fresh to brisk north winds, then becoming variable.
The 60 degree day in New England was blighted by heavy mist and an all day rainstorm. Boston logged nearly 2.5 inches in 27 hours, with forecasts of more foul weather 36 hours ahead. Citizens bundled in heavy clothing, churches saw slim attendance, and the Common lay deserted as logistics and city services strained under the storm. Rat activity surged in police divisions, a bulldog named Spider aided by killing two rats, and flooded streets and cesspools created urban lakes. Moon Island pumps labored, and Brookside avenue flood gates opened briefly as Stony Brook rose to unusual levels.
Weston June 21 a fatal shooting occurred at West Camp on the metropolitan water basin near the Wayland line. Edward Bird of Framingham was struck by a single bullet and died after the attack by Sherman Norman a 38 year old black man who fled into the rain. Police searched woodland across Weston as investigators probed a possible motive linked to a domestic dispute involving two women. Bird’s condition was dire but he remained conscious most of the day with details scarce as officials pursued the suspect.
John McGann aged 76 died suddenly at his Cutter street Somerville home yesterday morning. He was the country’s oldest billiard and pool table manufacturer, with a Chelsea street Charlestown workshop. He is survived by four sons and one daughter.
