June 20 dispatches report 2500 Russians slain with total losses near 12000 as Stakelberg's force barely escapes annihilation. Despatches reveal a rout and hint at a new Japanese attack, while near Kaichow a general engagement continues and the first train with wounded men moves north.
Convention opened with Henry C. Payne presiding and Elihu Root named temporary chairman. Reports show Charles W. Fairbanks as Roosevelt’s running mate after New York’s 78 votes. Lodge presses autocratic Stand Patters, signaling no tariff revision.
General Kuropatkin telegraphs Emperor on June 18 detailing two days of fighting and two night marches. He notes excellent morale and provides initial losses: East Siberian Rifles 15 officers killed, 49 wounded and 386 soldiers killed, 992 wounded. many wounded remained on the field. In the Thirty-third, Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth regiments one officer and 120 soldiers killed, 19 officers and 604 soldiers wounded. Ninety-six soldiers remained on the battlefield. Patrolman Roberts of Station 2 Cambridge captured Edward Dowd 24 of 51 Pine Street Cambridge after a pistol hold up claim against Mrs Powell. Dowd fled to a roof and was overpowered on the four story building edge before being taken to the station.
In Rumford Falls Maine Miss May Bunnell, 20, refused a walk with John Luro 26. He borrowed a revolver, shot her at point blank, then killed himself with a self-inflicted head wound. Bunnell died instantly. Luro's death was momentarily expected.
President Roosevelt invites Paul Morton son of the late J Sterling Morton to become Secretary of the Navy. Morton, a Republican delegate from Nebraska and Chicago business resident, is considering the offer after previously affiliating with the Democratic party. He refused a post on the Isthmian Canal Commission.
In a final closed vote 68 to 59 Park Street Church members approve tearing down the old structure after a heated debate. An earlier informal tally was 71 to 64 in favor, with organizers citing attendance and a rule barring non-attenders from business votes.
Two 16 year old boys confessed to placing an explosive on Western avenue car tracks last Saturday. Lucy O’Hearn was frightened and jumped from a car, sustaining serious injuries. The youths face court tomorrow before Judge Berry as police vow to curb such dangerous acts.
Police circles rumor Captain Wyman of Station 15 to Station 13 and Captain McBryan of Station 13 to Station 15. Sergeant Allan of Station 4 and Sergeant Carr of Station 3 ordered to examination for the vacant lieutenancy at Station 13. Twenty seven reserve officers to be appointed.
Boston and vicinity expect a fair Tuesday with a chance of showers later. Temperatures remain warm, and moisture could bring brief precipitation in the afternoon or evening. Residents should plan outdoor activities with a light change of plans for possible showers.

Bernard Comiskey 36 of Anderson street was doused with naphtha during a blast at 6 Blossom street and ran into the street where Reserve Officer Joyce smothered the flames with a rug. Comiskey suffered serious burns. Mintz and Angelo Chester also burned. All were treated at Massachusetts General Hospital. Comiskey is not believed fatally burned.
Two persons were killed and seven injured when a four story brick building at Third and Delaware collapsed due to overloading. Initially thought to be a carboy of ammonia explosion, the event trapped about 50 occupants on the upper floors. Firefighters aided in rescues as a panic spread.
Washington June 20 Cardinal Satolli was the guest of honor at a dinner by Secretary of War Taft at the Arlington Hotel. Taft welcomed Satolli noting his Rome negotiations on Philippine rural land issues and praising his friendship with Americans. Satolli replied with a gracious speech.
New York reports 102 more bodies recovered from the General Slocum catastrophe bringing total to 734 with about 300 still missing. The coroner's inquiry opens as crowds gather at the Bronx armory for testimony including Knickerbocker Steamboat Co officials and Slocum crew members.
Morris Klaisman, a 24 year old dealer in old metals on Hanover Street, was beaten and robbed by three youths on Tupelo Street Roxbury yesterday afternoon. He named Frank Plunkett of Dorchester 19 as one suspect. The Roxbury Court scheduled a 10 o'clock trial today.
Lusty cheers and music marked Harvard Pops last evening as students and alumni gathered on the Charles. Many alumni in attendance, including 1904 cohort delegations, joined in the festivities with crimson-clad fans among the crowd while others shouted and cheered from floors and balconies.
