Recruiting Delays Hit Ninth Massachusetts Volunteers
Disappointed volunteers gathered at East Armory for the Ninth Regiment muster but found no recruiting officer as majors reported to Camp Alger. Telegrams from General Grahame and Colonel Bogan caused conflicting orders. Some recruits were accepted for the Third Battalion, while others awaited muster and further instruction. Recruiting offices open in Boston and Lowell target engineers and other battalions, with notable activity from Major Darling and Captain Ames as work continues to fill quotas.
