Purse of Gold Presented to Dorchester Pastor

The Rev. Peter Ronan of St. Peter's Church Dorchester returned from a trip to Europe and was surprised with a purse of gold as a token of esteem. Parishioners filled the church last evening, crowded beyond capacity, and the pastor was deeply moved by the warm congratulations.

Doctor of Divinity for Boston priest Denis O Callaghan

Rev Denis O Callaghan longtime pastor of St Augustine's Catholic Church Boston received the degree of doctor of divinity from St Charles College Baltimore at its golden jubilee ceremony. Cardinal Gibbons presented the honor, which followed full theology exams, and the toastmaster was Father Callaghan. He was born in Salem and has led St Augustine's for thirty years. He will speak in Boston on the Fourth of July.

Japanese cruiser Kasagi completes builders trial at 23 knots

A Delaware Breakwater despatch reports the Japanese cruiser Kasagi underway from builders’ slip for a trial trip. She signaled homeward bound with 23 painted on her stack, indicating a 23 knot speed on the 40 mile test course outside the Cape. The vessel did not stop and may anchor tonight near Reedy Island after the trial.

The United States cruiser Columbia departed the Brooklyn Navy Yard after repairs since Decoration Day, leaving under the command of Captain Sands and heading to sea.

Tragic yacht capsizing near Nut Island claims three lives

A 16 foot yacht Louise capsized in a squall between Peddock's and Nut Islands. Zenas F. Babbitt 42 and Edwin W. Frost 36 drowned, while William B. Rolfe E. M. Holman and James A. Buckman were rescued. Holman remained in danger. two Nut Island lobstermen aided in the rescue. Frost and Babbitt were local business owners, with Frost Bros. and a Centre Street market among their ties. The party, including wives and children, had sailed from Hough's Neck for a brief outing. Police expect to recover the bodies as harbor crews search the area.

Drowning Fatality At Crescent Beach In Westboro

William Fannon, 39, of Westboro, died after entering Crescent Beach water shortly after 3 pm. Lifeguard William Murphy pulled him from two feet of water as low tide set in. Despite efforts by Dr. Newton and staff, Fannon died about an hour later. The death followed a hearty meal, with authorities suspecting asphyxia. The body was taken to Arthur V. Sanborn’s undertakers. medical examiner notified. This marks the bath house’s second fatal accident since opening.

Italian gang wounds Hyde Park blacksmith in street attack

In Hyde Park a 37 year old blacksmith Steve Farrell was stabbed four times by seven Italians near Fairmount avenue and Walnut street. Giovanni Pietro Piccolo was shot dead by officers at Mattapan. Two suspects were arrested and identified, four others fled, and the search continued at Mattapan with police aid from Boston officers.
