Will Maine Retain This Office in Navigation Bureau
Colonel Morton, long in the navigation post amid Blaine hostility, remains in place as Secretary Blaine takes no action. Congressman Farquhar pushes Captain Bates at Buffalo, but experts say maritime law expertise and a lawyer’s skill are needed. Maine’s Timonton, backed by the Maine delegation, is favored for the key bureau post, possibly delaying Morton's exit beyond the month.
