William B. Derby, cashier for Mutual District Messenger Company, was convicted of embezzlement and sentenced to three years in state prison. The sentence follows a prosecution that detailed misappropriation of company funds.
In HincuaM on June 19 a warrant seeks the arrest of Henry B. Winslow Elm Street grammar school teacher for an assault on 11 year old James Threlwell. Winslow denies the facial bruises. Miss Alice Ryan faces charges for beating pupil Forrest Russell Beal. Cases may go before Judge Kelley as public anger simmers over school punishment.
Shipping news lists numerous vessels arriving at Boston Philadelphia and New York from Liverpool Calcutta Colombo and Havana. Ships include Venetian State of Pennsylvania Wyoming Anglia Mendez Munez Borderer Netherholme Ardangorm Donati Sindoo Ontario Santiago Veendam Rugia Eider Verugian Waesland and City of Paris among others with date stamps June 18 19 and June 19.
Chicago authorities move to extradite Martin Burke alias Delaney also known as Frank Williams after a Chicago grand jury indicts him on murder and conspiracy in the Cronin case. Winnipeg dispatches say Burke denies involvement and plans to fight extradition with Chicago officers to arrive tomorrow.
At Piatt Agency on June 19, Indians voiced opposition to new treaties. Elders Old-Man-Afraid-of-His-Horses and Red Cloud urged caution citing unfulfilled 1868 promises and land losses. About 250 signed the bill while around 400 opposed, with Red Cloud demanding removal of signers from the reservation.
Samuel Hatch and Company sold land at public auction yesterday in Woodside Park Winthrow belonging to George H Wood. Several Boston buyers attended as lots were sold with a building restriction no house under $1600.
The Supreme Judicial Court reverses Judge Thompson’s 1888 ruling in the Hibernian case. It holds that Division No 1 formed in 1872 remains intact, the property belongs to the division, and plaintiffs are entitled to possession. The decision follows a 1884 Cleveland convention and a New York convention dispute.
Johnstown relief efforts continue with 500 ready made houses approved for purchase and store rebuilding. Laborers threaten a strike over low pay and night drift work. International aid includes £200 Turkish relief funds and a Belfast cable instalment of £500. Boston’s Johnstown fund grows to $137,555.53.

Wellington R. Kurt said the Salt Union in formation will be named the North American Salt Company Limited with headquarters in New York. The plan envisions capital stock up to six million dollars with funding from England and New York to unify salt production in the United States and Canada and to supply a superior article at a reasonable price.
Milwaukee June 19 A mortgage covering every dollar of property owned by the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul Railway Company except lands has been filed with Secretary of State Timme. The mortgage to United States Trust Company of New York totals 150 million dollars and funds a plan to make the trust company sole creditor to obtain lower interest. Bonds of 1000 each would run 100 years with interest between four and five percent. Of the total 118 million will retire outstanding bonds 8 million fund floating debt and the remainder issued at directors discretion.
Second day of the eastern circuit at Franklin Park Saugus features two harness races. In the 2 34 class Lulu H. wins for Frank Hayden with Princess second for J C Harrington. six starters in the 2 22 class see Alexander Kay and Nellie O among top finishers. Time records listed include 2 37 1, 2 35, and 2 39 14.
Army orders relieve Second Lieutenant R P Davis at Willetts Point and detail him to join his battery after leave. First Lieutenant J L Wilson released from torpedo instruction to join his battery. Inspector General Lawson to inspect Maryland Agricultural College. Two months leave granted to First Lieutenant H S Harris. Leaves extended for First Lieutenant S B Mills and Captain Thomas Sharp. Naval orders assign Naval Cadet P Hurlbut to coast service and update duties for Richard Rush and others. Ensign Charles N Atwater detached to Portsmouth. David Jones and E H Scribner reassigned to coast service and Bache duty respectively.
The Brooklyn inventor Mr Campbell was to ascend today but an accident affecting the gas tanks delayed the balloon portion of the air ship display at the Manhattan Athletic Club grounds.

Republican caucus names Thompson Carter Clark and Little for top state offices.
The thirty fourth annual Lasell Seminary commencement in Auburndale featured Dr. Alexander McKenzie of Cambridge delivering the main address. Graduates included Miss F W Barbour Indiana and Miss Josephine Bryant New York among others from distant states.
Official returns from Pennsylvania show the prohibition amendment defeated by 188,449. County reports indicate a statewide majority against repeal of the poll tax qualification, with the tally likely to grow as more totals are counted.
Norton Wheaton Seminary graduates hear Rev J M Gray as 70 pupils and 200 guests attend a morning procession led by the Germania Band. Derby Academy, Hingham, holds its annual exhibition with three diplomas. Howard Collegiate Institute in West Bridgewater reports no graduates. Northfield Seminary closes its tenth year with twenty five diplomas awarded.
The Cambridge Episcopal Theological School held graduation exercises in St. John s Memorial Chapel. The commencement sermon was preached by Rev. Percy Brown of Roxbury. Edward Staples Brown was ordained a deacon by Bishop Paddock of the Massachusetts diocese. Graduates include Edward Staples Crown Charles Hall Perry Lloyd Blodgett William Greenough Thayer Robert Aston Holland Frank Elmer Edwards and Arthur Rogers.
Samuel Untermyer, agent for English capitalists buying American breweries, denied plans to buy all Roxbury breweries Houghton's Koessles Burkhardt's Pratt's valued 4 to 7 million dollars. He said the English investors prefer flour mills rolling mills and steel rails manufacturing in the U S and would not disclose locations of mills or manufactories.
