Plot to free mad inmates uncovered at Bridgewater State Farm

Bridgewater June 19 a prison plot to free inmates at the state farm was exposed when guard Folsom found a broken lock and a removed oak bar. A ladder was hidden under vines at the base of a 20 foot wall triggering alarms and a heavy armed patrol. Authorities intensified the investigation of the 17 acre walled field housing murderers and lifers.

A horse and wagon carrying gasoline caught fire when the cart of Thomas Hicks, Brookline lamp lighter, overturned on Woodland road at Heath street. A lighted torch ignited the blaze. horse and wagon burned in seconds, but a man and two boys narrowly escaped with their lives.

Police report details Hicks driving a gas and oil lamp wagon when a sharp turn at Woodland avenue and Heath street toppled it. Five gallons of gasoline soaked the horse and wagon, igniting rapidly. Hicks and two boys jumped clear as the vehicle burned, with the horse perishing despite nearby aid efforts.
