Ivernia First Cunard Steamship Dense Arrival at East Boston Docks
The Cunarder Ivernia arrived from Liverpool at 8:30 AM, the first Cunard to enter East Boston's new docks. Captain Pritchard commanded the 1020 passengers and cargo, including 500 Scandinavians, 93 Irish, and notable passengers like actor William Gillette. Immigration checks by Colonel Billings proceeded swiftly, with many families separated and directed to trains or Chicago and Wisconsin destinations. Superintendent Ashley praised the docks, and a gift from Emperor Wilhelm, a silver goblet, was reportedly on board.

Local suspicions turn away from gypsies and toward a potential stranger who knew the terrain. The Clark family, poor and with a railroad worker father, awaits word.
