New York June 19 John Devoy editor of the Irish Nation was convicted yesterday of publishing a malicious libel against banker August Belmont. In court he declared no one is safe from libel arrests and defended the law while denying Belmont’s vindication. Judge Cowing sentenced him to 60 days in the penitentiary after two trials and considerable expense.
The annual meeting opened at CoxaconD New Hampshire with President A H Crosby presiding. Twenty three new members were elected and delegates introduced from multiple states and towns. The society endorsed erecting a fireproof library building for the U S Army Surgeon General in Washington. Afternoon talks covered What a doctor should be and Practice Medicine with an oration The Great Work. Obituaries for several doctors were presented and the session adjourned to 8 PM.
In Morrope Peru on May 30 an engagement lasted five hours between 200 prefectorial troops and 300 montoneros, many unarmed. The prefectorial forces won with 14 dead including Major Correa. Montoneros losses were 2 officers and 25 men. pursuit ongoing as reports arrive.
Chicago report says M. S. Nichols & Co. believe rumor of Parks & Co. troubles in New York prompted their rapid closing of Chicago board deals. They state their own actions caused by margin fears, not Parks & Co. failure, which they say was not due to any action by them.
Providence K R June 19 Brown University alumni association held its annual meeting this afternoon with Vice President Hawilten of Wor attending.
The second brigade begins a five day camp tour at Framingham. Camp setup proceeds with tents, depots, and improved sanitary arrangements. New fortifications include a barbette fort with Rodman guns, gravel embankment, and a broad surrounding ditch.
The Missouri River has risen about eight inches near Kansas City and is nearly stationary this evening. Rail traffic east and north remains disrupted with trains on several lines either halted or rerouted. Some lines, including Alton, Chicago and St. Louis, and Missouri Pacific to St. Louis, operate normally. Han-nibal ferries cars to Randolph, but Rock Island and Wabash lines report limited or no service. Damage is light aside from railroad property. Helena Arkansas reports seven inches daily rise and worsening bottomland flooding.
New York June 19 The Atlantic Yacht club held its 18th annual regatta with 28 crafts. Thunder, fog hindered racing. Large boats sailed to and around the Sandy Hook lightship, others circled Scotland and anchored off buoy 8. The Fanita led the fleet throughout.
Hanover June 19 under an old Dartmouth custom the graduating class held an evening sing out in the college chapel after prayer and Scripture reading by President Bartlett. The last college examination followed with a committee including L D Stevens, C D Hurlbutt, E P Abbott, John Seales, S L Martin and M V Knox. A New Hampshire College committee is named and a reception to the senior class by the Bartletts is planned for next Friday evening.
The horse, buggy and part of Arthur H. Blaney residence and furniture were attached after his dismissal from Massachusetts Loan and Trust. His employers accuse him of a lavish lifestyle costing $5,000 to $5,000 annually. He remains jailed on $50,000 bail, watched for possible self harm. His Dorchester Yacht Club accounts are reported as correct.
Alderman John J. Kelly fatally shoots James Toal at a Sixth Street firehouse in Cincinnati after a disputed exchange. Bystanders report Toal laughed and chatted before Kelly, angered, drew a revolver and fired. Kelly was arrested. He has prior brawls and a past illegal voting conviction in 1876.
Exeter New Hampshire June 19 class day at Phillips Exeter academy with George H Reed as class president Jefferson B Fletcher as secretary and Albert R Pritchard as president of the day. In yesterday's senate, rules were suspended to pass a bull allowing Lowell Young Men's Christian Association to hold more real and personal estate. A bill to abolish the treasurer and steward role at the women’s reformatory prison was reported, requiring a $10,000 bond from the superintendent. Other actions include engrossing the vinegar inspection bill and adjournments on food drug adulteration, Walter Shanly, land partition, and creditor remedies for deceased estates.
In a session the senate amended the house order to include railroad and Hoosac tunnel committees. Bowker moved for conference but was defeated. Capt Harvey and crew of the schooner Ephraim and Anna, abandoned between Barhegat and Fire Island, were towed in and arrived in Vineyard Haven on Tuesday in the schooner Ida EK. Lathan. The mill elevator fall injures William H. Faunce, badly breaking ankles and causing internal injuries. He is an overseer in the weaver room. In Plymouth, the superior court began trial of criminal cases with various sentences and verdicts.

In St Johnsbury Dr L G Brooks testified in the state versus Merchant murder case after a post mortem exam. He initially refused to answer, was jailed for contempt, then released after testifying.
O H Sleeper jeweler of East Northwood sues Carrie Langley for breach of promise seeking 3000 in damages. In Concords central Middlesex district court Joseph W Reed a Maynard lawyer was held in 1000 bonds to answer charges of assaulting Mrs Mary Saunders an elderly woman in the Maynard public library with Zeca the librarian present. Reed is noted as a Maynard assessor and school committee member.
The will of Oliver Read of Newart leaves $500 to the Second Baptist church of the city. The Rhode Island Alpha of Phi Seta Kappa held its annual meeting Tuesday electing Dr. G. L. Porter H. K. Porter A. G. Fisher to membership. Officers were elected including President Dr. Merrick Lyon vice president Rowland Hazard corresponding secretary Prof. W. C. Poland treasurer Charles B. Goff. Candidates for bachelor of philosophy degree may be eligible for membership.

A letter from MECHAN, late adjutant of the Mass Volunteers, rejects a June 16 Chelsea Telegraph story claiming he refused a fellow soldier's hand. He brands the report a "Yalsehood CHANEhS" and asserts his Army of the Potomac service years 1861 to 1864. He signs from Boston dated June 19, 1883.
The Empire State will begin its voyage Thursday morning with Capt. Phillipe leaving at 3 o'clock for Martha's Vineyard and returning Friday.
