Segee testifies in own defense in tax entry case

Charles A. Segee chairman of the Revere Board of Assessors took the stand in Superior Criminal Court. He denied making fictitious entries alterations or erasures and denied paying money to Collector Pendergast for taxes on property under McLeod or Stanhood as testified.

Mr Segee, age 60, long-time Revere resident, bricklayer turned real estate man, testifies about how he learned of certain entries and who prepared the State books. He declares no involvement in writing the entries, denies paying taxes, and notes aides and dates from 1909 to 1912 while details about McLennan and Ida McLeod appear in questioned sheets.

Drowned during Edison floodlight practice on Charles River

Edward F. Curtis aged 19 of Kenilworth street Roxbury drowned yesterday in the Charles River at Dedham when a war canoe used by Edison Electric Dumi nating Company employees capsized during a practice race. Eight companions, all workers on the night shift, survived after lengthy efforts by Albert Hewes and Morris Kannally. Curtis could not swim and sank 40 feet from shore before rescue attempts failed. The body was recovered after hours of dragging by West Roxbury and Dedham police.

Taxicab crushes woman in Beacon Park streets accident

Miss Iris Sundberg, 21, was struck by a taxi driven by John J. Talbot at the Beacon and Park streets corner yesterday afternoon. She was knocked down and probably fatally injured according to initial reports.

Miss Sundberg in Critical Condition After Accident

At Relief Hospital last night Miss Sundberg, a nurse trainee, was in critical condition with a fractured skull and grave internal injuries likely to prove fatal. Her mother Mrs Matilda Sundberg and sister Mrs Robert J Keane rushed to the hospital. Talbot, a Taxi Service Company chauffeur, was arrested for assault and battery. bonds of 3000 were posted and he was released after claiming the car was moving slowly when she stepped into its path.

Federal Reserve Act Establishes Reserve City System

The act creates federal reserve cities and districts to supervise banking. It requires at least 12 reserve cities, forms federal reserve banks in each district, and sets stock subscriptions at 20 percent of unimpaired capital with initial minimum capital of 5 million dollars. Oldest Harvard Alumnus Dies at 96

The Rev. James Ivers Trecothick Coolidge, 96, Harvard class of 1938, died last night at 8 o clock from double pneumonia. He was Harvard's oldest living graduate, beloved by hundreds of Crimson alumni while many classmates celebrated in Boston hotels and clubs.

Passing of Harvard's Grand Old Man Coolidge Noted

The long illness of Harvard class of 1838 member Dr. Coolidge ended at his daughter Mrs. Walter Dearne’s Cambridge home. He leaves a son Ellery Channing Coolidge and joins three other 1838 grads in mortality. Born 1817 in Boston, his career spanned Boston churches, St. John's Providence St. Matthew's, headmastership of St. Mark's School and a 70th wedding anniversary celebrated last April. Mrs. Coolidge died in June.

Investigation to probe cause of Salem fire at Vaughn tannery

Salem June 18 An inquiry will be held tomorrow to determine the cause of the blaze that gutted the Vaughn sole leather tannery at 407 411 Bridge street this noon. The fire destroyed five four story wooden buildings and a power house with an estimated loss of 350000 dollars.

Fire at Granite Street factory threatens drying room blaze

Fred Leech an employee discovered a small fire in the third floor dry ing room at 11 15 this morning. He tried to extinguish it with a pony chemical but flames spread quickly trapping him. All 200 workers evacuated as a general alarm sounded within 15 minutes and help came from Marblehead Peabody and Beverly. Sparks showered Federal street roofs but rain saved them.

Mayor's appointee rejected by Civil Service Commission

Thomas O'Callaghan, once a prominent rug merchant, was rejected by the Civil Service Commission for the city purchasing agent post, a role Mayor Fitzgerald had appointed him to. This marks the commission's first rejection of a mayoral appointment.

The Civil Service Commission declined to approve Mr. O Callaghan for the city purchasing agent job, citing lack of education training and experience. The mayor criticized the decision saying O Callaghan was as qualified as the late Mullen who held the post. The $3000 yearly position became vacant after Mullen's death. the mayor blamed Boston banks for O Callaghan’s reverses and contrasted past bank support with alleged lending to wildcat schemes elsewhere.

Senator Lodge attends nurse's funeral at Sacred Heart

Senator Henry Cabot Lodge attended the funeral of Miss Annie McDonnell, a nurse in the Lodge household for 28 years. The service was held at Sacred Heart Church in Mt. Auburn with Mrs. Lodge and their children John Lodge and Mrs. Augustus F. Gardner present.
