Body of Lynn Man Found in East River

The body of Ralph C. Varian of Lynn Massachusetts was found in the East River off Long Island City. Identified by letters, one addressed to Rev. Robert Bruce Hall of Greenwood Baptist Church Brooklyn. Friends say his wife died three months ago and he had been despondent, believed to have leapt from a boat while traveling from Boston to New York.

Seashore party attracts large Hebrew gathering at G A R Hall

Sole Support In Jail In Rochester Murder Verdict

Joseph Alesso, 40, convicted of manslaughter in the second degree for shooting and killing Joseph Lombardo during a July 17, 1899 quarrel. Justice Dunwell sentenced him to twelve years and four months in Auburn Prison. Alesso pleaded poverty and claimed innocence, saying he is the sole support of his wife and six children.

Youth Shoots Self by Accident on Cable Street

Walter Leavey, 17, of 10 Cable Street, accidentally shot himself in the neck yesterday afternoon while handling a loaded revolver. He was taken to City Hospital by police ambulance and is expected to recover.

Tufts Scholarship Awards Honor Oratory Winners

The Wendell Phillips memorial scholarship of seventy dollars a year was awarded to Forrest Sumner Lunt of Somerville after June 16 competition in Goddard Chapel before Professors Fay Whittemore and Stroud. Amherst Exercises Include Flint Prize Oratorical Contest

At Massachusetts Agricultural College Amherst June 18 the Flint prize oratorical contest in Stone Chapel determined two junior class winners. The Burnham prize speaking followed for freshmen and sophomores, also in Stone Chapel. An evening banquet for trustees faculty alumni and students closed with a principal feature appeal.

Picnic at Apollo Gardens Draws 2000 for Church Event

About 2000 people attended the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help picnic at Apollo Gardens. The main event was a ball game where Mission Church defeated St. Alphonsus Juniors 14 to 6 with lineups listed. Earlier, Maples beat Willows 3 to 1 in a juniors’ match amid several races and games including a greased pig contest and a tug of war where Alphonsus Association members beat the bene dicts in two straight heats.

About 25 000 people visited Revere Beach yesterday with 360 swimming. East wind kept water comfortable at around 70 degrees. Police raided a Ocean avenue tavern seizing six bottles of lager. Crowds filled Crescent Gardens and Point of Pines for vaudeville concerts and outdoor amusements.

The battleship Kearsarge drew about 10 000 sightseers yesterday afternoon as ideal weather and calm seas made the visit popular.
