Eddie McDuffee Quits in Disappointing Charles River Race

Eddie McDuffee quit after 1.3 miles in a pace race against Major Taylor at Charles River Park before about 15 000 spectators. Taylor won the twelve and a half mile event after McDuffee’s steam motor failed and pace machines broke down. The card also covered other events with Berle defeating Farnham in ten miles and McLean family taking top prizes in the five mile handicap.

London June 17 the fourteenth round underway at noon with Pillsbury Showalter Maroczy Schlechter Steinitz Bird Lasker Tschigorin Blackburn Mason Janowski Lee and byes for Cohn and Tinsley. After first adjournment several games were even or drawn with Blackburne ahead against Mason and Janowski beating Lee. Evening results saw Pillsbury Showalter draw Lasker over Tschigorin and Blackburne defeat Mason.

The Hull Massachusetts Yacht Club hosted its first post consolidation regatta off Nahant. The 21 foot Heiress beat 30 and 25 foot rivals including Ashumet Meemer and Windora, marking a remarkable performance rarely seen with such a small craft. Ashumet Meemer duel finished tight. Windora won 25-foot class. Dauntless led 18-foot class. Duchess defeated.

A London report says the Shamrock cost has nearly doubled with Thornycrofts funding part of the bill. The vessel uses an aluminum-like alloy, features unique deck and sail layouts, and crews sign six month racing contracts with bonuses. Defender Trails Bristol Craft in Trial Spin

The Defender arrived from Bristol and conducted a trial spin. W Butler Duncan in charge said Columbia arrival is unknown but not before Monday or Tuesday and may be towed by St Michaels with sails hoisted here for first time. Navahoe, carrying Royal Phelps Carroll, arrived from New York and will aid in tuning Defender and Columbia.
