Portland officials fear a leak in the Portland Water Company's Munjoy Hill reservoir. Excavation near the hill continues as a small stream oozes from the embankment. Residents evacuate temporarily while feed pipes are shut off and water is drawn for examination.
Three Cottage City men Augustus W. Leighton Joseph Bernado and David Evans aged 23 21 and 27 are believed drowned after a gunning trip. Their boat was found adrift with two coats aboard, and search efforts by the revenue cutter Manning began from Edgartown. Leighton was Eli Leightons son Evans an electric light works engineer widowed with one child Bernado unmarried.
Boston Harbor yesterday drew crowds to view Rear Admiral Sampson s North Atlantic squadron. The New York and Massachusetts opened for inspection while Indiana, Texas, and Marietta were mostly closed. Ferry crowds and camera enthusiasts filled the harbor as Sunday services aboard the Massachusetts featured New England Conservatory musicians.
Nantasket on June 18 saw 15000 visitors at the peak of a dry Sunday with six hotels raided for beer. The Tivoli hotel remained open, but drink sales ended after a police warning and a single drunken disturbance. Crowds flocked by steamer and rail, while Hull townsfolk split between opposing views on the raids and liquor licenses.
In Holyoke on June 18 President McKinley attends a Second Congregational Church service after Methodist invitation efforts. Mrs McKinley stays home. arrangements flip as Congregationalists win the welcome with lilies, flags, and a sermon aligning with gospel duties to the world.
Private Lentz of the Fifth seeks relief after morphine poisoning led to his probable fatal outcome. The 20 year old, known as a trotting horse driver from Providence, collapsed in a Friend Street lodging house after displaying a box of morphine pills and later dying on the way to City Hospital. His family in Providence plans to bring the body home.
A 22 year old soldier, George Lentz, who had been discharged from the Fifth Regiment, shot himself twice in the left breast at 36 Warrenton Street while seeking to end his life after returning from the war. He lay at City Hospital in serious condition, with reports he might not survive the night.
