Germans Driven Out of Nivray by French

Paris June 16 war office report says French forces drove the enemy from Nivray after earlier foothold gain. The action netted prisoners including an officer. In the eastern theatre June 15 artillery activity covered much of the front. Bulgarian recon detachments were repelled with heavy losses and two enemy airplanes were shot down.

Germans Bombard British North of Bethune and Ypres Canal

British official dispatch reports heavy German bombardments north of Bethune and along the Ypres Comines canal. British raiding parties entered a German post near Morris, taking 11 prisoners, and other raids south of the Somme yielded 17 prisoners and three machine guns. Hostile artillery remained active, especially near Dickebusch Lake.

Norwegian ships account for two of the 19th and 10th wrecks officially sunk by raiders in three weeks. Officials suspect the U boats target unarmed vessels to frighten morale rather than gain strategic advantage.

Steamship wins three hour chase off Virginia coast

A South American port liner out-raced a German submarine in a three hour stern chase off the Virginia coast early Friday. The ship docked at Atlantic port today after sighting a light near the wreck of the Norwegian Samoa, sunk six hours later in a Teuton raid. The captain, believing the pursuer to be an I boat, sent passengers on deck and prepared lifebelts with boats lowered for women and children.

Americans At Toul Repel German Attack

Germans shelled rear villages eight miles behind the line after a failed assault at Toul. American troops fought close quarters with bayonets and clubbed rifles in Xivray, killing nine attackers and taking six prisoners, including two officers. Prisoners said the 586th Landwehr and elements of the 22d Regiment, Eighth Bavarian Reserve, took part.
