Italian forces resist a breakthrough at the river, confining invaders to limited wedges. British troops regain ground on Saturday, while French units repel Austrian assaults with heavy losses. Austria claims 10,000 prisoners as Italians, British, and French seize about 3,000 captives and prisoners.

The Norwegian bark Samoa and the Norwegian sailing ship Kringsjaa were sunk by German submarines about 90 miles off the Virginia coast. Fifteen Samoa crew members were rescued and landed at port, while Kringsjaa’s crew was picked up by an American warship and taken to an Atlantic port.
Early morning raids in Greenwich Village and nearby spots netted 250 suspected draft evaders. Officers targeted all night restaurants pool rooms and rooming houses serving summonses to young men unable to show registration cards.
Reported clash as troops forced back enemy forces at Toul. In the skirmish, Yankees advanced and drove the opposing troops from the area. Casualties include several prisoners killed or left behind.
In France on June 16 Associated Press reports American machine gunners and riflemen repulsed a German attack in Alsace. About 600 German shock troops raided first line positions at Xivray in Toul sector but were driven out. elsewhere the Germans were beaten.

Cardinal O Connell made his first appearance at Camp Devens and confirmed 65, including Lt Col W A McDaniel of the Depot Brigade, after a 10 o'clock outdoor mass in a Knights of Columbus yard.
The overseas casualty list released tonight includes American names. Died of wounds P I Acker of Boston Massachusetts and G Patch of Clarendon Vermont is listed as wounded.
In Rome on June 16 the Chamber of Deputies cheered General Zuppelli after the minister of war announced Italian troops repulsed the enemy despite numeric superiority. He cited 3000 prisoners as evidence of Italian heroism and victory.

Men’s double breasted overcoats and fabric detailing removed. Sack suits length limited and raincoats fixed at 48 inches. Collars capped at 3.5 inches.
