Trains collide near Jeffersonville injuring fireman
In Louisville on June 14 an Ohio and Mississippi outbound train collided with the Louisville New Albany and Chicago inbound train on the Indiana side near Jeffersonville. Both engines were demolished and fireman Thomas Eads of New Albany died from fatal injuries. The collision was caused by the incoming engineer failing to observe signals at the bridge, delaying all trains for hours.

Fire faults in Lehigh Valley mine shaft forces closure
In Wilkes Barre a workman lamp ignited gas in the Dorrance shaft of the Lehigh Valley coal mines last night. The shaft is burning fiercely and flooding is underway. The mine will be shut for several days and about 200 men will lose their jobs as damage mounts.
