In Provence Rhode Island Henry Gardiner an 18 year old skater accused wealthy philanthropist Henry J Steere of criminal assault seeking 5000 dollars in damages The case revealed Gardiner claimed a blackmail plot by his lawyer Thomas F Cosgrove to extort money Gardiner said he aimed to frighten Steere into paying and dropping the case The court postponed judgment to Saturday with strong accusations against the absent lawyer.

Berlin sources say Prof Virchow found the illness incurable and that a larynx operation may be needed despite losing the prince’s voice. A Berlin specialist warns the case is serious and time for surgery is being weighed.
London June 18 The House resumed debate on the coercion bill’s third clause dealing with district proclamations. Amendments by Liberal Henry Fowler were rejected or amended amid clashes over who proclaims districts and the scope of executive power. The Lords finished consideration of the Irish land bill committee stage and set report for July 1.

The Hall & Ordway Manufacturing Company a beds and shoes maker in Nashville Tennessee failed yesterday after heavy losses. Liabilities total 160000 dollars with individual liabilities at 46000 dollars. Total assets reach 200000 dollars. It is the sole shoe factory in the South and was regarded as financially sound.
Five London dispatches note arrivals including the Bavarian and Bosson from Kinsale reaching Shield today and the Hialto from New York noted in a June 18 report. also the Fulda from Bremen is listed as arriving in New York.

Miss Mary B. Hill of Jamestown New York student at Cornell University freshman class slipped while returning from church along Cascadilla gorge. A rock gave way sending her sixty feet to the bottom. She was taken to Sage College building and later died at 2 o clock this morning.
In New Haven on June 13 the first round of the New England lawn tennis championship saw Ludington beat Kellogg after three sets and Pratt edge Beach in a three setter. Slo cum defeated Hurd, Thacher dispatched Jenks, Beach defeated Hall, while Ball, Harmer, and Notman progressed by default or forfeit. Tomorrow the second round in singles and first round in doubles are scheduled.
At Gravesend track New York on June 13 the opening race over three quarters of a mile was won by Alaric Gleaner with Winona placing second and time listed as 1m 16½s. Bendigo won the five furlongs second race with Faux Pas second and King Crab third in 1m 48s. The Lawn View handicap went to Favor over Barnum and Viceroy in 1m 56s for a mile and a furlong. Maroon captured the next mile and a furlong event with FitzRoy second. Reveler won the next mile and one sixteenth with Ratalpan second and Maggie J. third in 1m 51½s. The final one mile race saw Berlin take first, Rio Grande second, Parasol third in 1m 43½s.
Hartworp Conn June 13 A statue of Nathan Hale the martyr spy of the Revolution will be unveiled at the State Capitol tomorrow at 2 o clock. Charles Dudley Warner will deliver the presenting address to the State and Governor Lounsbury will receive it. The statue by sculptor Karl Gerhardt was cast at Mosman works in Chicopee Massachusetts.
Henry Thornton an 18 year old son of Allen's Print Works manager was stabbed at 10 30 last night on a road near Providence by Joseph Schayer a German and may die. Companions say roughs accosted them then words led to a fight. Schayer admitted the stabbing claiming self defense. Governor Ross received a war department letter tendering Texas volunteer flags in custody.
New York June 18 coffee futures plunged as June coffee fell 270 points and three firms suspended. Bears drove prices down after a rally attempt, with Rio Janeiro buyers and Gruner Crossman sellers dominating action. Publicized failures included B G Arnold Co and Mackay Small, liabilities cited above $1 million and $150,000 to $300,000 respectively.
Mr Powderly spent the morning at Adams House then met District Assembly No 80 executive board and a Worcester Knights delegation invited him to speak to locked out shoe workers in Worcester Spencer North Brookfield and Brookfield but he could not attend due to other pressing business. He attended a chat with the Mayor at City Hall and was presented to Governor Ames at the State House before returning to the Adams House to sail for Philadelphia for a Knights of Tabor meeting.

At 9 50 last evening an alarm from Box 54 reported a fire in bed clothes at 83 Edinboro Street a three story brick building occupied by Otis C Merrill and owned by J H & C H Wilson with minor damage. An earlier alarm from Box 4 at 5 10 reported a fire in a one and a half story wooden building at 280 Causeway Street tied to Joseph Goodnow lumber dealer and Robey Co lime coal and cement. The blaze started in Robey’s stable loft in a hay pile from an unknown cause with Robey Co damage listed at 700 and Goodnow at 100.
Early morning fire on Columbian square destroyed William Perry’s livery stable owned by Louis A Cook. Adjacent block housing a grocery, tin shop and dwelling suffered heavy damage with total losses around 6000, fully insured. Eight horses and carriages perished. cause unknown. Incendiary attempt reported at Silas Reed & Co shoe factory. kerosene doused front steps but flames were spotted. In New York on June 13 the Corinthian Yacht Club race off Fort Wadsworth started with light winds, then a stiff northeast breeze. Atlantic edged Galatea for overall win on corrected time while Cinderella beat Huron by 29 minutes 59 seconds with a time allowance. Alidia, Culprit, Fay and Gleam also won their classes.
A memorial service for John A. Cummings of Somerville, founder and first past supreme regent of the Royal Arcanum, was held at noon by the supreme council at the Hotel Vendome. Attended by council members, their ladies, Mrs. Cummings, and her two sons, the gathering honored his memory with tributes and adopted resolutions.
John W. Lake, sentenced in 1885 from Steuben county, was released at Auburn prison after a pardon from Governor Hill. Lake, an old soldier and former actor known as Will Howard, was summoned from chapel and his twelve-year-old son travelled from Boston to obtain the pardon papers. He acted in Uncle Tom's Cabin on stage.
In New York on June 13 the effort to obtain a jury for Jacob Sharp’s trial continued, with the defense out of peremptory challenges. Judge Barret filled the remaining seat as court adjourned. A Billy Moloney despatch reached a friend here saying he will face the music when ready, not before.
