President Maclaurin announced there will be no merger with Harvard at the All Technology Alumni banquet in Symphony Hall. The five year reunion drew about 2000 Tech men and equal number of guests with Governor Eben Draper in attendance and addressing the crowd.
A large reunion dinner featured music from a balcony band and song sheets with tributes to President Maclaurin. Among attendees were G Langa, Francis H. Smith, T W Robinson, Governor Draper, and President Maclaurin. The menu highlighted Penobscot salmon and Jumbo Squab with Moet champagne. A silver loving cup was awarded to the student from the longest tenure.
About 300 Chelsea club men on a special car to Salem Wills were locked in the Webb street car barns by police and Boston & Northern officials to quell a riot in the square. Three cars were delayed due to overload and windows were broken as police and rioters clashed. the cars were held for nearly an hour past midnight.
Men confined in a barn wrecked windows and furnishings then agreed to the B. and N. superintendent’s demands and hired an extra car. After police recorded their names they were allowed to proceed to Chelsea. No arrests were made as the crowd proved too belligerent for officers.
Washington June 9 The American legation at Guatemala loses Alger non Sartoris as secretary after a health related resignation. The State Department notes retirement from service while reports suggest internal Grant family opposition influenced his career. Sartoris had previously served as a captain before entering diplomacy.
Four colored boys were rounded up after a spree of break ins in Roxbury. Officers battering down a door at 18 Willow Park pursued two. Charles Ward leaped 30 feet to a shed roof then again to the ground before a half mile pursuit ended in capture. William Green climbed out a window and down a rain spout evading officers briefly.
Patrolman Murtagh called the boy to descend and climbed the spout. The pipe gave way and both men, about 35 feet down, landed in the yard. Green suffered an ankle fracture while Murtagh sustained leg injuries. The boy was taken to City Hospital for treatment.
Savannah Ga June 9 Captain J Waldron of Lynn Mass fell while boarding the schooner Tifton struck his head on the hull and fell into the Savannah River. He did not surface and search efforts failed to recover his body.
Five alleged check swindlers and letter box thieves were rounded up. Four were arrested at 30 Yarmouth Street in the South End by Post Office Inspector Jennings and Boston police. An opium layout was found in the arrest room, and several suspects were seen smoking when officers entered. Earlier, Letter Carrier Lewis Hyman attacked two gang members at 404 Atlantic Avenue during a box breaking of the Boston Bottle Wiring and Labelling Company.
An arrest led to rounding up suspects and uncovering a large stash of stolen checks from New York and Boston banks hidden in an opium den. The captured man claimed identity as Edward C. Dano, 22, son of Royal Dano, a Brockton real estate operator. He was jailed on larceny charges after a stolen mail piece was found. A report notes Dano was seen near 30 Yarmouth Street.
A special Boston & Maine train carrying Lady Aberdeen and party covered 74 miles to Concord, New Hampshire in 63 minutes, including a 26 mile stretch in 26 minutes. The trip cost $222 at $3 a mile, after missing the Montreal regular schedule and boarding a private Grand Trunk car Violet.
A special train manned by W. F. Savory the conductor sped from North station at 9 03 on Track 17. It reached Lowell 26 miles away in 26 minutes then passed North Chelmsford Nashur and Manchester before joining the Montreal express at Concord. The crew included engineer Joseph Ames fireman Joseph Broderick and brakemen J H Cameron and S L Lincoln.
Stuart Co. Godfrey of Milford Massachusetts will graduate at the head of his class from West Point next Friday. He has held top honors since entering four years ago and serves as cadet lieutenant and editor in chief of The Howitzer. Mental exam results were announced today.
Mrs. Blanche M. Tarbox declares no compromise or settlement will be agreed to regarding her husband Bernard L. Tarbox’s elopement with Gertrude Mae Devine of Dorchester. She denies any ground for a second marriage or divorce and says she has not decided her course amid family pressure and legal counsel.
In Rockland Maine on June 9 the battleship Michigan reached 20.01 knots in standardization tests. Builders and officers said she should meet the 18.5 knot contract speed in a four hour run tomorrow aided by fine weather and a smooth sea.
The Michigan ran a sequence of speed tests with three at knot speeds, three at 17 knots, and climbs to 20.01 knots on the 11th run. Top-speed runs averaged 18.976 knots. Naval Trial Board members and Engineering Board observed. Captain William G. Randle was navigational officer and Luther G. Love kin chief engineer. The ship heads to sea for four hours of high speed tests before proceeding to Camden, New Jersey.

Carrigan guides the Boston Red Sox to a third win versus the St. Louis Browns. Boston Nationals lose 13 2 to Cincinnati. Harvard baseball eyes a turnaround against Holy Cross at Soldiers Field. Boston bowling teams excel in New York national tournament. Yale crews arrive at Gales Ferry for competition.
Mrs. Alice M. Ingoldsby of Langdon apartments sues C. C. Hutchinson 65 year old treasurer of the Mechanics National Bank for 20000 alleging breach of promise to marry. She says eight years of courtship ended when Hutchinson cast her aside under Hutchinson family influence.
The plaintiff, once famed in newspapers after a 1910 divorce from Mr. Brown of New York to wed Hutchinson, had previously been the wife of George Ingoldsby, who died years ago. Her 12 year old daughter, studying at Miss Ely’s boarding school in Washington Conn., wrote to Hutchinson hoping for a visit next Friday, facing a burly male nurse in his Mechanics Building apartment room 38 in Lowell.
June 9 The Pope sent to Most Rev W H O Connell archbishop of Boston a sapphire and diamond episcopal cross for the 25th anniversary of his ordination. Gift brought by Mer Bressan the Pope's private secretary with a congratulatory letter. Archbishop received many other congratulations.
Former judge Henry S. Dewey failed to win 76.45 million dollars in a libel suit against five Good Government Association members. A 34 minute jury verdict found the association acted within their rights in reviewing his mayoral candidacy years ago. Dewey seeks a new trial.
After six days of trial Judge Dewey sought more than three days to present motions on exceptions for another trial. He defended his stance against newspaper notoriety and refused to issue a public statement. Four juror questions were answered with no damages found and defenses deemed in good faith, signaling readiness for an appeal.
Nearly a dozen villages in Aroostook and Washington Maine and York and Carleton New Brunswick faced large forest fires lit skies by June 9. Hundreds of men battled the blazes as one 15 year old boy died trying to save his father’s cattle at Edmunston.
A goodsized steamer ran aground shortly after 9 p m near the Point of Woods life saving station on the seaward side of Long Island. Thick weather prevented identifying the vessel and hindered lifeboat launches. The life saving crew continued efforts to reach the ship as the wrecking tug Relief departed at midnight for assistance.
The forecast calls for generally cloudy skies with occasional light showers Thursday and Friday across Boston and vicinity. Light east to south winds, with moderate to brisk east winds along the south coast.
