Obituary of Hermann the original prestidigitateur of magic

Professor Herrmann, famed as the original prestidigitateur, died in Carlsbad after a career that included tours in America through 1862 to 1868. A master of sleight of hand, he invented the rabbit trick and could transform simple items into stunning feats. His prowess eclipsed by later magicians in certain illusions, he relied on pure skill and dexterity rather than stage machinery or mystic effects. His nephew Alexander continues some tricks in Boston, but the elder Herrmann avoided sensational gadgetry.
