In the House of Commons Mr. W. K. Smith announced he would move to set reporting period for the Irish crimes act amendment bill. The motion, supported by Unionists and opposed by Liberals and Parnellites, aimed to advance the measure by June 17 with venue clause omitted and a commission of judges proposed in a second bill.
Light winds and a later calm produced a farcical New York Yacht Club regatta. Twenty five starters struggled to complete as the Atlantic led the large boats across the line, beating the Galatea by 46 minutes 36 seconds while Shamrock took second to Gracie by 5 minutes 20 seconds.
Dr Morrell Mackenzie of London performed a second operation on the crown prince’s throat removing another portion of the tumor. Professors Wegner Bergmann and others attended with the crown princess present. Cocaine used to deaden sensation. Virschow to examine the specimen and report. The prince will travel to London Monday with Wehner and Mackenzie, then Isle of Wight to recover.
During a heavy fog a British steamer Castleford en route from Montreal to Newcastle and London struck near the Seilly Islands. One hundred bullocks have been landed while the remainder were drowned. there is no hope of saving the ship.
The Monarch Steamship Line five steamers failed to attract a high bid of £112,000 and were withdrawn. Plans shift to selling them at auction to raise more money. The Commercial Clubs of Boston and Chicago arrived in St. Paul for dinner at the West Hotel. In the afternoon they toured local sights and will depart for Lake Minnetonka for a jointly hosted banquet at the Hotel Lafayette by fifty Minneapolis and fifty St. Paul business men.
New York June 9 parishioners committee of St Stephen Church met to draft a petition for Dr McGlynn reinstatement to be sent to Rome. Petition to be submitted to parishioners tomorrow evening and, if ratified, circulated nationwide for signatures with a goal of 1,000,000 to 2,000,000.
Washington reports on June 9 suggest the President will return to work Monday and may offer Justice Woods' seat to Secretary Lamar. Friends split on acceptance, with some favoring a judiciary role over an administrative post. Cleveland left the woods and traveled by train, greeting crowds at Moira and Brushton along the way.
The Republican caucus in Phoenix Hall, Coxcorp, N H, 156 of 182 members present, nominated William E Chandler for the full term and the short term seat. Cyrus A Sulloway praised the candidate, while others debated election of two senators and precedent. Chandler declared the party’s past record and future aims, with voters likely supporting his election as Marston supporters aligned. The Democratic caucus named Harry Bingham of Littleton for Senator.
Providence reports a death in a squalid Providence tenement where Edward Hammill, 65, was found with a head wound after a morning quarrel over rent. A woman, Mrs. Moran, is held on suspicion. police and the medical examiner assess whether the wound resulted from a fall or foul play.
Richard White of Gloucester reports that he and Archie McKinnon lost their vessel on May 23 when fog shut down. They drifted until June 2 and were picked up by the Theresa D. Baker about seventy miles southwest of Sambro. McKinnon died twenty hours later and was buried at sea after days of surviving by eating raw fish.

New York on June 9 the grand jury indicted George W Lynch an officer of Sharp's railroad for embracery in Sharp's trial. The Warner embracery charge was dismissed. At Sharp's trial this morning one jury seat remained vacant and William B White a builder was chosen as the fourth juror. The defense used all twenty challenges this afternoon the prosecution has seven left. A bare possibility remains that the trial may begin tomorrow.
Ottawa reports definite selection of Laurier as the new Liberal leader. The outlook for reformers appears dim as Blake is said unlikely to return to public life due to brain illness. Laurier, little known outside Quebec, is noted for a controversial wartime remark about Saskatchewan and the half-breeds.
Samuel A. Barnum fought off a burglar in Danzery Conn early Thursday. He was stabbed five times but wounds were not serious. The intruder, a 19 year old man from Boston who called himself Joshua Jones, was bound with a clothes line and tied in the sitting room. Barnum’s son aided in securing the suspect, who was later bound over to Superior Court in 5000 bonds.
In joint session the New Hampshire Legislature elected A. B. Thompson of Concord secretary of state Solon A. Carter of Concord state treasurer John B. Clarke of Manchester state printer and A. B. Twitchell of Gorham commissary general A bill amended the Colby bill affecting the Concord railroad including leasing terms to Manchester and Lawrence and Northern and Montreal with reduced tariffs and a five year review by railroad commissioners to adjust fares and coal rates for support of local industry
New York aboard the City of Chester emigrants were detained on Ward's Island. The emigrant commissioners approved landing three women and one man with their families totaling twenty-one of the ninety passengers. The remaining emigrants must be returned by the Inman Steamship Company. Secretary Bayard and British Minister West have discussed the matter, noting disfavor toward shipping foreign governmental subjects at public expense when friends in the United States fail to provide support.
Rear Admiral Luce of the North Atlantic Squadron met State Department officials to coordinate a Canadian waters cruise. He will safeguard American fishermen and avoid clashes, reporting on fishing-ground conditions and U S Canadian relations after the Sailors' and Soldiers' Home dedication in New Haven on June 17.

The executive committee of Local Assembly 6676 denounces Conroy Wentworth and other master builders over labor disputes. Box 7 sounded at 8 34 am for a fire in an old wooden stable on West End Park near Allen street owned by B F James. A still alarm at 10 50 pm reported a fire at Wiley and Richardson paint and garnish factory 92 Sudburt street owned by A Wentworth. Damage total 250 dollars. Engine 4 and Chemical 1 extinguished the blaze.
A gasoline tank exploded near Fourth and Market streets igniting a blaze that damaged about 10 000 dollars in property. Fireman Henry Iler and Mat Peake were buried when a burning building collapsed. Peake survived in critical condition and Iler was found dead. Other workers including Shrum Brey Reeves and James Reynolds suffered severe burns. several more firemen were injured. In Springfield a box shop fire on the Union block top floor caused water damage to first floor stores. losses at Taylor Bros 5000 dollars Wells and Rafter 3000 Brey Bros rubber goods 4000 and Charles Hall crockery 30 000 all insured. building damage under 1000 dollars.
Roderick McDonald of Gardiner Maine convicted of frauds linked to Miranda A. Richardson pension case. One year in prison and a $20 fine ordered. Another indictment pending for immediate trial after term ends. York Manufacturing Company of Laconia New Hampshire elected officers including William G. Saltonstall and Henry S. Grew, with Lucius L.
