The Alabama Democratic State convention opened at 10:30 a.m. in Montgomery with Chairman Tompkins presiding and praising President Cleveland. Thomas Arthur Doyle of Providence dies at home on Benefit Street after a cerebral hemorrhage. Born March 15, 1827, he rose from clerkships to mayor, serving nearly eighteen years and holding numerous civic and Masonic roles in Rhode Island. He married Almyra Sprague. no children.

A Vienna despatch reports the lower House of the Reichsrath adopted a bill suspending jury trials for two years in cases of persons under indictment for anarchy. In another item, Mr. Justin McCarthy plans a lecture tour in the United States starting in September.
Pelham New Hampshire dedicates a 20 foot granite monument to Deacon John Butler the town's first settler. Descendants celebrate with a large gathering, a church service, and speeches detailing the Butler lineage and Pelham's founding in 1721. Attendees include dignitaries from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. the event features music, a poem reading, and letters from notable figures.
The dedication marks the opening of the new hospital funded by last year's carnival committee.
