Sharks Fight With Whales Aboard United Fruit Ship
Reports from Kingston and other ports tell of 17 whales trailing the United Fruit steamship from Saturday afternoon to Sunday night. A large following of threshers engaged in a fierce night battle, then dispersed by dawn leaving the sharks still in pursuit. Bananas were tossed to distract the sharks but fear among women led Purser John Dervin to improvise a scarecrow with bananas gunny sacks and a live tarantula. The sharks quit the chase after the distraction.
