West End Street Railway Bill Backed Without Amendments

The House opposed constitutional prohibition and favored the West End Street Railway Company bill after a heated debate. Amendments centered on preferred stock and 8 percent dividends, but no changes were adopted and the bill moved to a third reading. An appropriation of 78000 dollars for militia uniforms was reported. Senate actions included advancing the Stony Brook loan bill and passing the Malden water bill to be engrossed with a reconsideration motion filed.

Prohibitory liquor amendment vote ends in narrow defeat

Massachusetts Senate debates the prohibition question and votes 139 to 74 against the proposed constitutional amendment to submit liquor prohibition to the people. Prompted discussions feature lawmakers from both parties, with mixed stances on license law, temperance, and the need for a statewide vote rather than Legislature action.
