Turret Captain William J. Clark of Peabody and his gun crew on the American tanker Silver Shell are credited by the Navy Department with sinking the first German submarine. The official announcement confirms the action.
Additional June 5 figures from small New England towns show banks holding back Liberty Bond subscriptions or communities failing to meet governmental duties with six days remaining. The Liberty Loan Committee released the compiled data from the towns last night as the drive entered its final stretch.
British forces attack along the Ypres salient sweeping through shattered front lines. Echoes of a massive blast travel far as towns and villages are captured and German positions collapse under the assault.
Washington reports about 15000 men will be trained in the second wave of eight officers training camps from August 27 to September 26. Deputy Sheriff Gerow of Bridgton arrested Dr. Gray on a warrant from Malden mother Mrs. Arthur N Bruerton. He allegedly took the Bruerton children on May 1 in an auto to Maine, was tracked to a cottage near Highland Lake, Bridgeton, where a surrounding posse forced a retreat into the woods with officers guarding all roads to prevent escape.

The ministry of marine reports American warships off the French coast and the naval collier Jupiter arriving in France with 10 500 tons of wheat and supplies. Built at Mare Island San Francisco the Jupiter is the navy's first electrically propelled steamship influencing later battleship propulsion.
