Boston and New England endure a third day of extreme heat with little relief expected until evening. Schools close as residents cope with power and ice shortages expected to worsen discomfort citywide.
Washington June 5. Senate debate on the peace treaty covers publication issues, treaty principles, and the League of Nations as opposition lines harden. Polk denies briefing newspapers on the treaty. The session stretches over five hours with sharp exchanges as lawmakers press for clarifications and recall past assurances.
James R. Edlin a 32 year old unmarried judge of the Middletown City Court and assistant clerk of Middlesex County Superior Court for 10 years died by suicide this afternoon. He had hoped to be named court clerk last Monday by the Superior Court judges but the present clerk was reappointed after 35 years on the job.
John T. Wilson, 15, of 88 Harvard street Dorchester, is in City Hospital after being struck by a car driven by Dr. William A. Cleary of 579 Columbia road. He suffered facial abrasions and is held for observation after jumping from an auto truck on Washington street near 325.
Thomas F. Murphy counsel for Herman L. Barney prepares to take the witness stand in Brighton Court to clear himself and three women of aiding in the escape of Barney from the Charles street jail. He vows to explain all, regardless of legal technicalities.
Eyewitness Earl Barney testifies as the Murphy trial continues. Additional witnesses are expected to take the stand as Attorney Devlin presents his case. Continued on Page 12 Fourth Column.
The Council of Four in Paris continues negotiations on German peace counter proposals and finalizes clauses of the Austrian peace convention. Involved are German delegates and parties from Austria as the peace process advances after the St Germain agreement.
Reports from Paris say the council cannot answer Germany before the end of next week due to complex issues under advisement. The Austrian treaty’s financial clause is unsettled with no fixed payment yet. a commission will decide the amount and methods after reviewing Austria’s resources. Premier Paderewski protests any change in Silesia terms.
In National League action St Louis defeated Cincinnati 1 to 0 while New York and Pittsburg games were rained out. New England League results show Portland 14 Fitchburg 4. Grace Loretta Williams 18, sweetheart of Sergeant Alvin Cullum York, is set to marry the World War hero this Saturday with Governor A H Roberts of Tennessee presiding. Williams’ mother has reconciled and will attend the wedding of her daughter to the famed Red-Headed Mountaineer, hero of the conflict.
Walter F. Hodges led 150 Hodges Fibre Carpet Company workers from Indian Orchard in Springfield after a conference with the superintendent. The loomfixers and weavers demand an eight hour day and a twenty percent wage raise, while the company offers a fifteen percent increase.
Postmaster General Burleson ordered telegraph and telephone lines under government control since August 1 to resume operations for private use immediately. The Post Office Department will retain certain controlling measures under the terms of the order.
A day of extreme heat pushes temperatures to 96 with widespread suffering. Henry L. Wildes, 52, a church sexton and school janitor, died by his own hand in the church basement. The heat causes ten prostrations, ice shortages, and closures of schools and factories across the region. Beaches and resorts remain busy amid the sweltering conditions.

Forecasts show Friday becoming fair with showers at night or Saturday. Cooler conditions are expected Saturday. Winds from the south and southwest will be moderate. Local showers expected in eastern New York and New England, with Vermont and Maine seeing showers and cooler air, while northern New England remains fair Friday before weekend showers.
Washington June 5 employees of the Western Union Telegraph Company in Florida Alabama Georgia South and North Carolina West Virginia Virginia Kentucky Tennessee Mississippi and New Orleans Louisiana members of the Commercial Telegraphers Union were ordered to strike immediately tonight by S J Konenkamp president of that organization.
President Konenkamp announced a strike order supporting Atlanta telegraph and telephone operators who walked out days ago. He said a nationwide strike is likely within days as postal wires may be returned to companies and a peaceable settlement was pursued earlier.
New York June 5 Carl ton president of Western Union Telegraph Company says a strike by Commercial Telegraphers Union members in 11 states would have little effect. He notes over 40,000 eligible employees but only about 700 belong to the union and fewer than 400 in the relevant territory are union members.
Augusta Maine June 5 Governor Milliken nominated Hiram W Ricker of Poland a hotel man to serve on the Public Health Council. The appointment was announced today.
