New Haven Director Ledyard Denies Mellen Indictment Motive

Lewis Cass Ledyard of New York, then a New Haven director, testified before the Interstate Commerce Commission denying Charles S. Mellen’s claim that he allowed himself to be indicted in the Grand Trunk case to shield J. P. Morgan. Mrs Elizabeth C Holman of Waterville Missouri admitted under cross examination that she married Frederick Ernest Holman on August 12 1908 while still married to Rev Cranston Brenton of Yonkers New York. She sues Brenton Dr Oliver C Smith and Dr Paul Waterman for 50000 damages alleging conspiracy to abduct and confine her in a Vermont insane asylum until she signed a confession.

John Crin, 38, of Dedham, leaped from a second story window to escape a fast spreading fire sparked by a defective chimney. The blaze damaged Crin and nearby Fred Arnold’s home, with Crin’s losses around 30 dollars and Arnold’s involving about 300 dollars. Crin and Mrs. Crin were away at the time.

Boston Man Suspected in Henniker Cafe Murder

The Peaslee death near Henniker New Hampshire is now linked to a Boston man, with Detective A H Barrett sailing to Boston to pursue the trail. Barrett notes motives include a long standing grudge, and the suspect was in Henniker May 22, the night of the murder. Harold E. O Neil 21 of 202 Harvard street Cambridge was arrested on abduction charges by police inspectors in Washington street building where he worked. His bride, Marion O Neil aged 15 from Jersey City, eloped two weeks earlier prompting the charge filed by her mother Mrs Mary G Cadigan of Roxbury. The situation surprised the groom who believed the mother had forgiven the marriage.

The passenger steamer Northland of the Eastern Steamship Corp. ran aground on Bartletts Reef ten miles from New London while en route to Portland Missouri. Honors for Empress dead in Quebec funeral parade

Twelve crew members of the Empress of Ireland who died in the St. Lawrence disaster were buried in Quebec with a solemn ceremony. Military bands played as mourners from all classes lined the routes between St Patrick's Church and the Anglican Cathedral. The Duke of Connaught’s aides, Sir Francois Langelier, Sir Lomer Gouin, and cabinet members attended, along with Mayor Drouin, CP officials, and Captain Kendall who attended the Ans Cathedral service.
