A bill to create a new holding company to take over Boston and Maine stock, now controlled by New Haven interests, was approved by the committee on railroads and reported to the Senate after four o clock with three dissents by Robert Washburn Hargis and Scully.
A cheering crowd gathered at Saneuil Hall to greet National President Matthew Cummings and State Chaplain Rev Philip J O'Donnell on their return from a two month mission in Ireland as envoys of the AOH. The event drew Tribernians and marked a significant homecoming despite espionage concerns.
A juror testified to court alleging that real estate operator and defendant John Mason Little coached a witness in the libel case brought by former Judge Henry S. Dewey. The proceedings added a new jury to the extraordinary action valued at 76.45 million dollars, as Dewey signaled raising damages to 476.45 million.
The old jury was dismissed after Judge Dewey's opening and part of the testimony. Joseph P. O'Brien of 890 Huntington Avenue on the first panel charged that Mr. Little coached Edmund Billings, secretary of the Good Government Association, by signs while testifying. Thomas W. Lawson through his secretary dismissed reports of his engagement to Nellie Peck Jackson Solomon as absolutely false and ridiculous. The claim tied Mrs Solomon to Dr James A Solomon of Dorchester and Portsmith based on Brookline and Huntington Avenue movements. Lawson’s camp called it a joke with no basis in fact.
Charles J. McCarthy aged 12 of 1230 Blue Hill avenue Dorchester was knocked down by an auto owned and operated by F I Heimer of Norfolk street on Blue Hill avenue near Lauriat avenue last night. He received injuries that may prove fatal.
A cloudy to partly cloudy forecast for Boston and nearby areas indicates showers likely Friday afternoon or night with cooler conditions in the south and southwestern Maine. Saturday remains unsettled with possible showers and moderate northeast to east winds, reflecting an overall unsettled pattern across New England.
The thermometer at Thompson's Spa on Washington Street recorded yesterday's temperatures with readings showing values around 60s and 70s, including 61 62 63 and 76 degrees in unclear handwriting. Ix Alderman George H Battis Leo F McCullough former president of the Common Council and Attorney James T Cassidy were convicted of larceny from the city of Boston and sentenced by Judge Scho field of the Superior Criminal Court. Battis received three years, McCullough two years, and Cassidy one year in the house of correction after a five hour hearing noted for sensational incidents.
Fire destroyed the open air theatre at Norumbega Park Auburndale and damaged the women's cottage roof. Loss estimated around 8000 dollars. Fire began about an hour after the evening performance and sparks flew into animal cages causing an uproar though no animal injuries or escapes occurred.
Detroit Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox 5 to 3. Pittsburgh beat the Boston Doves 9 to 8. Other games saw New York 7 over St. Louis 5 and Chicago 9 over Philadelphia 6. National League results Cincinnati 6 Brooklyn 2, Chicago 4 Philadelphia. Harry Lord named Red Sox captain.
