Meats and Flour From Free List Under Underwood Tariff

Washington reports the Senate finance sub-committee backed removing meats and flour from the free list in the Underwood tariff bill. Beef mutton pork and flour would face duties, oats rate cut, oats may be taxed, and wheat duties maintained. Sugar schedule approved as in the House.

Clerks Row Settled After Railroad Dispute

New Haven June 2. A satisfactory adjustment of the trouble between the New York New Haven Hartford railroad and its clerks has been made. An agreement covering the points at issue was signed today. Acting Commissioner G W W Hanger of the federal Department of Labor, who mediated, announced the settlement. The dispute concerned rule interpretations.

Post's Greeting Like a Word From Home on Cincinnati

Kurt Hain, 22, chief wireless operator aboard the Hamburg American line steamer Cincinnati, recalls how Boston Post readers received a welcome message from the ship 350 miles off Boston. Passengers sent greetings across the Atlantic, and the Post was the Cincinnati’s sole newspaper link from Hamburg to Boston.

Christian Science Mother Church Holds Annual Meeting in Boston

Several thousand members of the Christian Science Mother Church gathered in Boston for the annual meeting. Frederick Dixon of London was elected president for the coming year. The year saw 102 new churches established in places including Germany Australia New Zealand and Porto Rico. Lectures by the Board of Lectureship drew 850000 attendees, up 100000 from the prior year. Sweden officially recognizes the church after ministers failed earlier to gain approval.

Stricken Patrolman Dies After Emergency Surgery

Patrolman John W. Boutilier of West Roxbury station died at City Hospital after being found unconscious on his route last Friday night with appendicitis. Surgeons conducted an operation late Friday night in a vain effort to save him.

New 9 in 11 Hours Bill Moves to Senate

The bill to cap work hours for carmen at nine in any 11 hours advanced to the Senate after a House amendment aligned it with Attorney General Swift’s view that the bill is mandatory. The change makes the measure permissive, letting a carman work beyond nine hours in 11 if chosen.

Revere assessors refused to issue a warrant until the list of uncollected taxes held by Collector Pendergast is returned. Pendergast cites evidence concerns in a current case against Chairman Segee. Chelsea Child Burned in Fire at Home

Annie Borden aged 5 of 194 Arlington Street Chelsea suffered serious burns from playing with matches yesterday afternoon. Her mother, in trying to extinguish the flames, was badly burned on the hands. The child was taken to Frost Hospital.

The Boston Press Club held Theatre Night with 75 members at The Old Homestead Boston Theatre. Guests then met players and management at a reception afterward in the clubrooms.

Dynamite Theft Probed in Malden Neighborhood

Malden police hunt suspects after a contractor blasting a ledge on 103 Pierce Street had a chest broken and dynamite sticks stolen. Four sticks were recovered, one officer carried them a mile to the police station. Reports say local boys were playing with sticks, and one boy took a stick home to show his mother. The boy was told to return the dynamite.

Fire Sweeps West Hatfield Village Killing Homes and Barns

West Hatfield faced a disastrous fire today as four farm houses ten barns several sheds and a machine shop burned. High winds fueled the blaze with Northampton and nearby towns aiding in the effort.
