By a near unanimous vote the I W W barbers strike after a mass meeting at 724 Washington street. About 500 journeymen will join the action demanding higher wages and shorter hours. A parade is set for 8 AM starting at North Square heading to 284 Commercial street.
Ruth Katharine Daggett, baby daughter of Byron B. Daggett, was baptized at the Scottish Rites Cathedral in Buffalo on June 1 using ceremonies not seen in the United States since 1771. The infant became a ward of the Lodge of Perfection and gains world wide guardianship by the Masonic fraternity. Daggett is a thirty third degree Mason and sovereign prince of Palmoni Lodge of Perfection.

An arsonist, linked to a two week string of church fires, set a blaze at the Glendale Methodist Church near Malden in Everett. Damage reached about 2000 dollars before firefighters contained the fire in a rear storeroom. the rear wall was destroyed as the congregation heard Rev. Fred M. Estes preach. Chief Joseph T. Swan will lead the Everett fire department investigation.
Colonel Roosevelt arrived in Chicago from Marquette en route to New York and spoke in high spirits about winning damages of six cents in the libel case against Iron Age editor Newett who had acknowledged that reports of the former president's inebriety were unjust.
The Pope, turning 78 the next day, receives numerous telegrams from around the world. He will mark the occasion quietly at the Vatican, allowing only relatives and his entourage into his apartments.
The Pope received Cardinal William H. O Connell archbishop of Boston in farewell audience this morning before the cardinal heads home Wednesday. They spoke about ecclesiastical matters and the upcoming missionary congress to be held in Boston in October with about 60 bishops expected from the United States and Canada.
A hose wagon from Bunker Hill station responding to a church fire in East Somerville crashed on Main Street after a horse shied. Driver Benjamin H. Shute suffered a fractured skull and serious injuries. James McGee and James Griffin were badly hurt. The horse died and damage was about 50 dollars. Frank Amann and P F Connolly escaped injury.
A Bay State limited train derailed near South Station injuring eight as passengers struggled to exit through windows. Panic spread through a wrecked parlor car as the Providence local smashed into the Pullman, authorities reported.
A list of injured individuals from an incident involving escaped steam. William A. Cook, Daniel M. Morrison, John J. Brady Jr., T. B. Campbell, Fred Plasket, G. W. Knight, John G. Twomey, and an unidentified Providence woman suffered injuries ranging from scalp wounds and bruises to burns and strains.
A major wreck on the 3 o clock New York express scene under the Cove street bridge in the south terminal yard left eight injured and many narrowly escaped death when the Providence local train sideswiped the New York express at an open switch. The overturned Pullman car Stoughton carried 15 passengers as chaos erupted inside and the engine of the Providence train was demolished.

American League games featured Cleveland defeating St Louis 6 to 1 in the first game while St Louis bounced back 9 to 3 in the nightcap. Detroit beat Chicago 1 to 0 in the American section and New York topped Cincinnati 4 to 1. Chicago defeated St Louis 4 to 2 in other action.
The Rt. Rev. Charles H. Brent of Boston, Episcopal bishop in the Philippine Islands, was a steerage passenger on the Caroma which reached New York from Liverpool today. He said he enjoyed the trip immensely.
Bishop Brent describes his steerage experience with immigrants from Great Britain and Scandinavia aboard the Caronia. He plans to meet Secretary Bryan and Secretary of War Garrison in Washington before a Boston summer, praising the Philippines' political and church condition.
James Caveney aged 23 of Hampshire street drowned after saving his friend William Richards when their canoe capsized at Lake View. Richards could not swim but both held to the overturned craft until a motor boat neared. Caveney tried to swim to shore and drowned.
Two young men from the Glee Club went canoeing at a lake. When the canoe overturned both were thrown into the water. Richards soon sank despite Caveney’s effort to rescue him, and Caveney drowned while guiding Richards to safety. A motor boat crew later arrived to assist.
New Bedford June 1. The whaling bark Alice Knowles returned from a two and a half year voyage today leaking. Captain Taber expected a September homecoming but the crew refused to pump the ship and catch whales, so the Knowles was brought ashore.
At Red Men’s Hall in the South a gathering of blind, legless and armless men formed the Human Derelicts Protective Association. The Governor and city Mayor were absent, with no speakers, banquet or festivities, only a somber assembly of the world’s unfortunate.

Forecasts show unsettled conditions in Boston Monday with generally fair skies thereafter. Tuesday will be fair and cooler with moderate to brisk westerly winds across Northern New England and Southern New England, Eastern New York, and the coast. Local rains are possible Monday with subsequent clearing and a shift to southwest winds changing to northwest.
