June 1 Meadowbrook hosted the international polo cup opener with 20 000 spectators as America defeated Britain 414 to 3. British cavalrymen produced a stunningly strong stand and outplayed the home team in the first half, surprising a crowd expected to witness a routine match.
The English led 4 to 1-2 at halftime but the Americans surged in the final stretch. With fresh ponies they outpaced the British, breaking up their team play and galloping to victory amid wagers against them.
In American League action Chicago defeated Detroit in a 10 inning game. New York topped Philadelphia in the National League, while Boston beat St Louis in the league’s first game. Umpire Doyle was relieved from duty in the National League. Milton High senior girls won a baseball game. Boston Bermuda race was postponed a week. Boston Latin lost to Harvard second team.
The Boston House approved the teachers' salary bill despite Governor Foss vetoes by 167 to 47. It marks the third veto upset this year as teachers packed the State House, occupying floors and galleries and lobbying lawmakers.
Lobbied Legislature wins approval of a teachers' pay bill. The measure passed by 139 to 15 shift in support from the Governor, despite committee objections. The bill raises salaries in elementary public schools where the maximum was under 1000 dollars, with the raise made mandatory.

Counsel for Vaughan alleges the remedy worsened Mrs. Bull's health and was given against a physician's advice. Thorp testifies the medicine was brought from India by Miss Noble at Mrs. Bull's request.
Mr Thorp testifies he knew Miss Noble gave medicine to Mrs Bull and did not consult the attending physician. The defense cites Miss Noble as wielding dominating influence. Known as Sister Nivedita in her Indian order, she inherited 30 000 and is now in India after Mrs Bull's death.
Leading advocates of free wool at a conference in Speaker Clark's office agreed on a resolution adopted by the Democratic caucus, conceding the necessity for a revenue duty on raw wool to assure government revenues. Chairman Underwood said a 20 percent duty is necessary to insure sufficient revenues for the government as the revised wool tariff fight opens. The committee's recommendations will be adopted without change.
Advocates led by supporters of William Jennings Bryan urged free or gradually reduced wool duties. Chairman Underwood presented the full revision to 20 Democrats in a caucus, proposing a 20 percent raw wool duty, cutting the Payne Aldrich rate by over 5 percent.

Mr. O Grady travels to New York after identifying a man held as Hugh Allerton Sherman as the Jack of all trades he knew. He believes the victim is his daughter and notes the last address of the daughter was 148 West Thirty seventh Street.
