Mayors of Buffalo Brooklyn Pittsburg Detroit and others urge free transfers as a boon to riders and railroads. The Senate rejected the bill 19 to 6 with five pairs, a reconsideration motion expected. Messages from Baltimore Detroit and Boston emphasize practical benefit and urge action.
A vivid Boston day of celebration marked the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company's 258th anniversary. Governors, mayors, and clergy attended services at Faneuil Hall and a public procession moved from State Street to the Common with bands and ornate uniforms. A London-bound delegation led the marching, amid delighted crowds and ceremonial commissions.
London dispatches report that Col Francis Rhodes George Farrar Lionel Phillips and John Hays Hammond, leaders of the Johannesburg reform committee, who were sentenced to death, are anticipated to have their release announced today. Hammond has been paroled to visit his ill wife in Johannesburg. Barney Barnato guarantees fines for the reform prisoners freed Saturday.
The newly elected Democratic city committee will not meet tonight as President Donovan postpones the convention to organize until Friday night. The delay follows the election commissioners not finishing vote counting in contested wards.
Julius Leibruecher ex mayor of Newark writes to the Post praising the free transfer scheme on street railway lines. He says it enables city residents to reach nearly any area for one fare and notes the companies were asked to provide transfers at inter sections when routes modernized to electric power. In Detroit two street railway companies charge 3 cents fare with transfers on their own lines, while a third plans a 3 cent fare with possible transfers as a 6 tickets for a quarter provider shifts to three cent fare. The public sees improved service as city talks final franchise terms. The three firms offer modern equipment and expansive routes, with transfers now common across the city.
The mayor argues free transfers across the Cleveland Electric Railway Company and the Cleveland City Railway Company boost travel and revenue. Transfers allow cross-town travel, with a single fare enabling journeys over long distances, benefiting workers and the public alike.
