Record floods sweep Kansas Nebraska Missouri Iowa and Oklahoma with hundreds dead missing and thousands homeless. In Topeka flood and fire claim 150 to 200 lives, 8000 homeless, property losses around four million dollars, and trains halted by rising waters.
The Kansas City flood leaves 40 to 50 dead with 3 to 5 percent unaccounted, and up to 7 million dollars in property loss. Fires fire across the west bottoms as water swamps Union depot area from the Kansas River surge. Dozens rescued amid boats, rising water, and widespread damage as trains and commerce halt.
In Topeka and surrounding mills residents endured a rising flood on May 31 as 109 workers at D Street Church 100 at Topeka Woollen Mills 94 at Casey's flour mill 56 in an elevator and 84 at a fire station faced peril. L K Bailey and A I Alexander performed heroic rescues including saving a dozen women and children from a burning lumber yard. Women and children, and missing husbands, dominated the distress reports as steam launches were awaited and notices sought from families.
May 31 Topeka reports the Kansas River receding after a day of fear and floods. Officials cite 175 to 250 dead estimates, 30 rescued so far, and a massive aid effort including trains of boats, steam launches, and donations from Topeka and Galveston. North Topeka suffers severe destruction as rescue teams race to move survivors and deliver provisions to the Page elevators.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for fair weather Monday and Tuesday with a chance of showers Tuesday evening or night. Winds shift from easterly to southerly by Tuesday.
