Washington May 81 The utmost alarm is felt over Mrs McKinley’s condition as she grows more critical despite rest and medical care. Heart stimulants may be needed again. The President remains despondent and may cancel engagements after doctors consult tomorrow.
President McKinley told Senator Lodge he could not attend most engagements in Massachusetts this summer due to Mrs. McKinley’s health. He may still attend Harvard commencement on June 26 when a degree is to be conferred, the rest postponed for her rest and quiet.
Governor declines to accept the resignations of Senators Tillman and McLaurin saying a canvass would foster bitterness and hinder state progress. He argues his duty is to avoid a heated campaign and allows full discussion next year. Senator Tillman says the governor’s role is to notify the president and state maps on vacancies.
A London despatch reports Sir Charles Sutherland has begun action to set aside Andrew Carnegie’s purchase of Skibo Castle in Scotland. The case centers on the 28,000 acre estate in Sutherlandshire used for hunting, with Carnegie having resided there during visits to the Atlantic coast.
D. B. Robinson longtime Boston investor and former vice president of the Atchison Topeka Santa Fe railroad died at his Chicago home after a prolonged illness. He rose from Vermont roots to joining Central Pacific and later Santa Fe management, aided by Boston financiers such as Thomas Nickerson Joseph Nickerson Isaac Burr and T Jefferson Coolidge.
