History of the Shaw Monument Effort and Statue Plan
The movement to honor Colonel Shaw began in autumn 185 with a meeting of prominent figures including Governor Andrew and Senator Sumner. A committee formed to raise funds led to a growing total, and by 1888 nearly 17,000 dollars had been raised. Auguste St Gaudens was chosen to sculpt an alto-relief for placement at the State House, with the design evolving over twelve years and the site moved to a prominent position on the Common. The fund later approached 23,000 dollars, supporting the grand memorial project.
