The Gallant Seventh arrives in Boston at 7 20 yesterday morning and swiftly occupies the city. Soldiers march through the gate with a Boston guard while the depot clears in minutes. Colonel Appleton and staff remain at the Brunswick as Companies D and I are stationed, with the color company leading the march to hotels.
Alderman John H. Lee leads the machine for Democratic city committee president as Sen Hayes vows a lively convention fight. Senators Gallivan Lomasney Quinn and McNary back Hayes or Lee in a web of ward loyalties and Republican context. The Parker House conference sets the stage for a tough convention battle.
The Seventh Regiment arrives from Providence to Boston amid eager crowds. Soldiers march through Park Square and public spaces, with armory preparations and citywide reception plans forming a festive display of esprit de corps.
In Williams Bay Wisconsin on May 3 20 the elevating floor of the Yerkes telescope dropped forty five feet to the dome bottom while professors Barnard and Elleman had left after a night of stargazing. The telescope suffered no damage.
A large blaze destroyed subway stores in Adams square and nearby lumber at 3 am. Origin traced to spontaneous combustion. alarm from Box 18 at Quincy House. Fire lit the surroundings, damaged electric wires, a kerosene barrel exploded sending a 100 foot flame. Loss falls on Richardson and Young. all-out in 23 minutes.
Theodore Durant will be executed on June 11 at San Quentin. Governor Budd telephoned Warden Hale with the order for the death watch and then departed secretly for San Francisco, withholding his prepared statement for release tomorrow.
Forecast for Monday in Massachusetts Rhode Island and Connecticut shows unsettled cloudy weather with possible local showers and cooler temperatures. Winds shift from southerly to westerly as the day progresses.
A Shaw monument unveiling and parade are planned starting at 10 A M from Clarendon and Beacon Streets with a 10 30 A M dedication at the monument. Governor Wolcott will review the march and Army units will participate followed by ceremonies at Music Hall with speakers including Booker T. Washington.
A Harvard College watchman thwarted a youth attempting to vandalize the John Harvard statue in the early hours. The would be vandal carried a red paint pot and large brush but was restrained after a pursuit. the intruder fled with notable speed.
