A violent cyclonic storm swept Washington with fierce wind rain and hail. Three dead hundreds injured and extensive property losses followed as residents recovered from a half hour of chaos and devastation.
A violent gale roared from the north with near 70 mph winds, ripping roofs from houses and toppling an office building. Trees were uprooted across Washington, leaving streets, parks, and the White House grounds strewn with debris as hail followed a dramatic temperature drop.
A girl was severely injured yesterday afternoon when a downtown bank automobile struck her on Milk Street. Police investigated the incident and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.
Miss Mary Cody of 35 Central Square East Boston sister of Dr Joseph J Cody East Boston surgeon was struck by an automobile owned by the People s National Bank on Milk Street yesterday afternoon. The car dragged her about ten feet then fled to the bank where a messenger boy was sent back to aid her. The crash followed heavy rain before two o clock as Miss Cody crossing Milk Street with Miss Mary Matty in front of the Beacon Trust Company at about ten miles an hour.
The Senate lobby investigating committee cleared the way for cross examination of Martin M. Mulhall the alleged ex lobbyist for the National Association of Manufacturers by NAM lawyers. In executive session the panel considered over 200 questions from the attorneys.
A committee will scrutinize Mulhall as a search for accuracy in his two weeks of statements. Lawyers may probe his memory for facts tied to letters and testimony, possibly keeping him on the stand for days. Rumors say James E. Watson seeks a DC grand jury indictment for perjury against Mulhall, but Mulhall retracted statements about Watson.
Felix J. Woodward and wife Jessie must pay Morris Samuel doing business as Chelsea Investment Company the sum of 2830 though they have paid 2175 on notes totaling 2170. They sought equity to cancel the note and mortgage on furniture but the master’s report finds no relief.
The master finds the Woodwards owed Samuel at foreclosure $2825 on the third note and must pay $2880 for the use of $2170, with $59.64 in simple interest if only 6 percent. Furniture sold June 3, 1913, bought by Samuel for $2825. claimants say property worth $8000. No undue influence or fraud found.
Washington July 30 Professor Royal Meeker of Princeton is set to become the third member of the Board of Mediation and Conciliation created under the Newlands law after a White House conference between President Wilson and Commissioner Chambers.
Charles Sumner Bird, Progressive gubernatorial hopeful, attacked Governor Foss in his Lexington Park speech. He challenged Foss to a race for the Progressive nomination, claimed Foss was deceiving parties, and said he refused a merger offer from Republicans and Bull Moose factions.
About 800 people heard the opening campaign speech by Progressive challenger Mr Bird. He joked he had not yet been nominated and urged Foss to test his strength in the Progressive party. The crowd cheered for Bird and rejected Foss, while Bird criticized Governor Foss for tariff policy clashes and party infighting with state leaders.

Odin Johnson of Salt Lake City, captain of the Cincinnati team, crashed after veering toward a pole at the motordrome. The live-wire explosion set a gasoline blaze, killing Johnson and five year old William Davis. Six others were fatally injured and many burned, with several still hospitalized.
A cablegram to General Jose Manuel Hernandez in exile confirms Cipriano Castro’s followers have begun invasion activities in Venezuela. The message dated yesterday was sent from Cucuta Colombia and notes Castro’s revolutionary move. Hernandez, without further details, commented that this developments align with his expectations.
