The City of Rockland, in tow of three tugs and escorted by the revenue cutter Gresham, was driven to harbor stern first after colliding with the steam collier William Chisholm off Boone Island. Two crew members are missing as pumps keep the ship afloat at sunset.
Aging Becker figure named among four police officers involved in a 2 400 000 annual graft scheme. Jack Rose reports startling statistics showing Becker as part of the money divide within the department. Herman Gray captured in Brooks near Bangor after murder accusation, held by Deputy Estes pending Bangor jail transfer.
The collier Chisholm passed Boston Light about half a mile ahead of the stricken Rockland. Eighteen hours earlier the Rockland with 400 aboard struck the collier bow in dense fog. Lifeboats were launched and all passengers were transferred to the Chisholm, with no fatalities, though several were injured during transfer.

A riot call to station 6 in South Boston sent officers to the New England Coal Company's dock near the Northern avenue bridge. About 35 people attacked six sailors and firemen who had come ashore from the Coastwise, a collier that tied up at the dock yesterday with strike-breaking staff aboard.
The mob barred retreat to a ship and fired bricks and debris from a grain elevator ruin. Strike-breaking seamen fled up Northern avenue calling for help as railroad watchman Patrick Griffin alerted Station 6. Firemen and patrol pursued through the car yard until the mob escaped in the darkness.
A Brooks woman encountered a man lying by the road while walking home. He followed her to town where neighbors saw them. Deputy Estes notified, the suspect was captured with no resistance and identified as Gray by a Carmel resident who knows Gray. The deputies contacted Gibson and Sheriff White for confirmation.
Benjamin H. Farren of 18 Shannon Street Brighton was caught in a steam drill at Dodge Boiler Works East Boston yesterday. His clothing tore free from the machine saving his life as two ribs were broken and he sustained cuts and bruises to his head and shoulders.
Brockton July 30 Today an Abington resident Michael Dunn aged 86 had his first shave by a barber. He had never used a barber before preferring to shave himself and wear a beard but today he allowed a barber to touch his face and now urges friends to patronize barbers.
A large freight locomotive became stuck after leaving a siding at Waltham station on the Fitchburg division of the Boston and Maine railroad. It jumped a frog and straddled five rails, requiring nearly four hours to free.
Arthur Brisbane editor of the New York Jornal married today at Calvary Episcopal Church to Miss Phebe Cary daughter of Seward Cary of New York City.
Cardinal Anthony Hubert Fischer archbishop of Cologne died in Bonn Rhenish Prussia after a prolonged illness. Born in 1840 he was created cardinal in 1903 and led the Cologne movement. He recently visited Rome seeking papal support for Christian labor unions against the Berlin movement.
New York July 30 Lieutenant Becker allegedly confessed to Jack Rose that police graft from gambling and vice totaled 2400000 yearly. Rose testified Becker said the loot was divided among four officials with each taking 600000. The district attorney could offer leniency if Becker reveals others involved.
A plain clothes squad from La Grange Street police raided Ye Sing’s store at 11 Oxford Place in Chinatown at 1 am. The effort to find evidence led to walls torn down and sewers dug up, but the operation yielded no results and drew hundreds of local residents.
Police led by Sergeant Richard Fitzgerald battered in doors and shattered ceilings and partitions during a raid. Fire axes and sledge hammers opened access as inmates cried out and a crowd of about five hundred gathered, but no arrests or evidence of gaming were found.

A source states Becker plans to defend himself by claiming Rose Webber and Harry Wallon lied to protect themselves. The report notes no suggestion of Becker becoming an informer despite pressure from the surrounding questioning.
George A. Lewis, 61, of 20 Mystic Street South End, was arrested yesterday after Mrs. Manuel Rose of 1 Dundee Street Back Bay saw him entering her first floor suite with a key in the door. Lewis claimed he was in the building to sell soap when booked at the station house.
Beatrice Elizabeth Murdock an 11 year old daughter of James W Murdock a mechanic of 843 Border street East Boston was spirited away on May 3 from the Chapman School by a car ride and has been returned from New York and Philadelphia to her father Mrs Margaret Murdock her mother had taken her from Boston eight years ago while living apart with no divorce filed.
Joseph Kapsa a gunner's mate and Christian Scientist who refused Navy typhoid vaccination was court martyalled for disobeying a superior order and sentenced to Point Royal. He has now decided to undergo the vaccination after advocacy from Senator Works of California and others supporting his case.
