City Tax Exempt Parks Behind Hotels Probed by Boston Officials
Boston officials reported at City Hall that at least a dozen so called private parks and many areaways remain exempt from taxation. The debate centered on land behind Hotel Oxford owned by Nathan Matthews Jr and others. Assessors indicated the land was historically tied to the hotel but not taxed this year. Councilman Goodwin challenged the claims, presenting figures showing prior assessments. Principal Assessor Charles Folsom supported Matthews, saying the land is used for light and air and not buildable.
