A touring car crashed into a buggy on Mill Street Hill in Waverley injuring four men and three women. Superintendent W H Shaw and Mrs Shaw suffered head and arm injuries. Neil McCarthy the chauffeur fractured his left ankle. a bellboy and two women in the car were treated. C F Friedie the Belmont Spring Country Club chef had minor bruises.
Police report indicates an attempted suicide by Pulliam with self inflicted wound. Medical staff treat the individual and record the incident as a non fatal self harm case. Further investigation into motive and circumstances is expected.
Harry C. Pulliam president of the National League shot himself in the head at the New York Athletic Club. He was in ill health and had recently caused a stir at a Chicago meeting with strange conduct. The bullet entered the right temple and exited the left, destroying both eyes.
A man named Mr. Pulliam retired early with his room on the third floor. At about 9:30 p.m. a telephone call from his room rang through to the downstairs switchboard but produced no reply and the receiver appeared to be off the hook, prompting further inquiries.
Everett police say a lamp exploded at 47 Woodville Street while a wedding was being prepared. Mrs Mary Shapiro 35 died from extensive burns. Julius Shapiro and a Shapiro sister suffered severe burns as blazing oil fell on clothing.
James J. Jeffries posts 85000 for a bout with Champion Jack Johnson. The sports page notes Boston Red Sox opening here today after beating the Highlanders in New York yesterday, and other results including Detroit 5 Cleveland 4. Philadelphia Athletics take a doubleheader from Washington. Boston Doves lose two to the New York Giants to close their home series. Leu McDonald's Margin wins the M. & M. stake at Detroit, the 10000 Grand Circuit classic.
Washington July 28 President Taft intervened in tariff talks after the House hike on gloves and Senate lumber duties. Conferees revised to a 1.35 duty on lumber and scrapped a 45 cent coal duty, prompting dismay from Gloversville’s Lucius Littauer as talks stretched through the day.
Late in the day the conference adjourned and Senators Aldrich and Payne rode to Fort Myer to present the new agreement to the President. By nightfall no assent to the compromise on lumber duty had been obtained.
Mrs James A Cruikshank of New York completes a new passable trail in the White Mountains by blazing from Mt Field to Mt Willey. Accompanied by her husband, she traversed over 15 miles of untraveled terrain much of which tested seasoned mountaineers.
Mrs. Cruikshank, famed for Canadian Rockies journeys, becomes first woman to connect Mount Field and Mount Willey in a single day. She completes the traverse in 1 hours 40 minutes marking the route with signs for future travelers, clearing obstacles and marking springs along the way.
Harry Thaw answers reporter Jerome about the killing of White. He declares there is no justification for murder and expresses remorse, saying he regrets the act and that no one has more feeling than he.
Harry Thaw spent six hours on the witness stand in White Plains defending his freedom. He faced Jerome with calm temper and sharp recall of events surrounding his marriage to Evelyn Thaw. Tears and emotion marked his narrative as he spoke, drawing reactions from spectators and Mrs Evelyn Thaw who watched with scorn.
Thaw sparked audience claps before Judge Mills. the judge warned the offender. Prosecution claims Thaw's wit hid a paranoiac condition, citing alienists Dr. Mac Donald and Dr. Flint who argue his conduct confirms true paranoia.
